Rob McKenna says goodbye to his glasses

Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna no longer needs prescription glasses.

“I got Lasik,” he gleefully told me this afternoon on a visit to the KOMO newsroom.

McKenna, a Republican who announced that he is now running for Governor, has worn glasses for as long as I’ve known him.

As a fellow glasses wearer I always notice when anyone gets new frames or switches to contacts.

So when I turned to see McKenna doing a live interview on our 4:00 p.m. news without his glasses I was curious about the choice.

After the interview was over he walked by my desk and we chatted briefly before I simply asked him about it.

“Not sporting the glasses for the campaign?” I said.

“I got Lask and it is great!” McKenna said.

We chatted about the pains of wearing glasses when McKenna finally got right to the heart of the matter.

“The best part?” he asked himself. “I get to wear these.”

McKenna held up his new nonprescription sunglasses.

For that reason alone I am envious, especially when and if summer actually arrives in Seattle.
