Today we open the vault and check out a newscast from May of 1955. Keith Jackson introduces weather with Marge Anderson, who points out what's happening around Washington in a much different way than we see during weather forecasts now.
Hi everyone! Well, it seems Spring is here… for now.
The nice weather over the past few days got me thinking about weathercasters. You all know Steve Pool -- he's been telling us about the good and bad atmospheric happenings for nearly 24 years now.
Many of you might remember Ray Ramsey. He came into our homes for about 20 years.
Today we open the vault and walk into a newscast from May of 1955. Keith Jackson is there, and he introduces weather with Marge Anderson, who shows us the entire state of Washington. You've gotta love the commercial that splits the weather segment!
At the end, we see Herb Robinson, who tells us of the demise of New York City's 3rd Avenue elevated train. Herb went on to become the editorial-page editor at the Seattle Times for a dozen years.
You'll note that Keith introduces Marge in "live, local color." So why is the picture black and white? This recording is called a kinescope. It was essentially a film camera pointed at a TV monitor that recorded what was aired. It was black and white because color was more expensive.
Here's hoping the nice weather holds for a while, though it looks like the rain will visit again all too soon.
