In September, 1983, Costco opened its first discount warehouse in Seattle. More than 26 years later, customers are still stocking up on gigantic jars of mayonnaise, boxes of jerky and discount electronics.
On September 15, 1983, Costco opened its first discount warehouse on 4th Ave. South in Seattle.
We didn't cover the opening that day, but apparently heard enough about the store in the next few weeks that Business/Feature reporter Don Usher went to the warehouse and filed this report on December 8, 1983.
Back then it looked like, well, a warehouse. It still does, I suppose, but there are certainly more wares offered nowadays than 26 years ago. So a belated Happy Anniversary to you, Costco!
