Ken Mason, of Long Beach, waves his flag during a rally at Bixby Park to celebrate the ruling in favor of gay marriage in the state of California.
The issue of gay marriage is a volatile as ever.

That’s clear from the e-mail response I got to my commentary applauding a judge's decision to overturn a voter approved measure in California that banned same sex marriage.

Brent Leslie writes: "Your statement 'I see this issue in its simplest form: Should the majority have the ability to determine the rights of a minority' seems inconsistent with the fact that the opinion of one judge set aside the wishes of 7 million voters."

Thomas Summit: "I would like to know where your actual morals begin and stop. Where would you say this perversion should stop, because that's exactly what this homosexual issue is."

Steve Plancich: "I predict a challenge that will legalize polygamy under the equal protection clause. Why should those who want to enter into a plural marriage be discriminated against?"

Doug Lewis: "The judge overturned the voters' decision because he is openly gay. He couldn't make a decision that would hurt his own kind."

And finally from Mike Buck: "There is no discrimination. ... I’m not gay; can marry a woman; cannot marry a man. A gay man can marry a woman, cannot marry a man. We are both treated the same under the law."

Mike, I find your logic more than just a little flawed.

Thanks for writing, everyone.

Have a great weekend.
