Ken Schram: It's about the flow of money- er, traffic
SEATTLE -- Let's look at the logic.
For some freakish reason, traffic is light enough on I-5 for you to be cruising in the far left lane doing a modest 62 miles an hour.
Suddenly, you see the blue lights in your rear view mirror.
You pull over and the trooper comes up to inform you that you're about to get a ticket.
The trooper says you were impeding traffic because drivers behind you in the fast lane were wanting to go 70 as they zip around slowpokes doing 56 in the other lane.
The trooper explains that the left lane is for passing only, which means you also should be constantly weaving in and out of the other lane to get around the slowpokes, but you can't stay in the left lane even if you're doing the speed limit.
Confused?
Well then, here's a simpler explanation: The state patrol is going to hit you with a $124 ticket for DRIVING in the left lane.
The patrol says it's all about the flow of money.
Belay that, I meant it's all about the flow of traffic.
I'll admit, when I first heard this I thought, "What the hell?"
But now I get it.
It works this way: After someone gets hit for driving the speed limit in the fast lane, the trooper can then peel out and nab some other person for hitting 70 when passing in the left lane...
See, totally logical.
In a pigs eye.
