Ken Schram: Yet another cash cow for the state
By Ken Schram
SEATTLE -- I remain in obstinate disagreement with the new law that takes effect Tuesday.
We’re going to have to either turn our cell phones off while driving or hook up with a hands free headset. Our nanny state legislators have decided they need to protect us from ourselves even though most studies suggest it's the actual talking on the cell phone that distracts drivers, not merely holding the phone to one's ear. Of course, this is supposed to be all about “safety.” Hmmmmmm. The state patrol estimates that of 141,000 collisions in Washington last year, less than 1% had talking on a cell phone listed as a contributing factor. But why quibble about safety when the state can start hitting people up for $124 a pop. The new law says you can't be pulled over just for using a cell phone. The state patrol will have to conjure up some other reason to blue light you, say for something like driving too long in the far left lane. I’m betting that'll change soon. I’m betting that within a couple of years, talking on a cell phone will in itself be enough of a reason for drivers to get pulled over. Know what? I’ll be obstinately opposed to that as well. Have something to say to Ken? E-mail him at kenschram@komo4news.com. And be sure to join Ken, along with John Carlson, on "The Commentators", which airs every weekday from 3-6 p.m. on AM 570 KVI. It's a lively exchange of information, insight and perspective with two guys who don't agree on much, but still manage to enjoy each other as they tackle issues of the day. Even better, callers are invited in on the verbal action. |
