Ken Schram: Young voters aren't that stupid
By Ken Schram
SEATTLE -- I’m trying to figure out if "they" think young voters are stupid, naive, or simply gullible.
"They" would be the folks who are pushing Proposition One - the multibillion dollar plan to extend light rail into Seattle’s suburbs. "They" are of the mind that the freshly registered youth who are backing Barack Obama are pretty much "gimmes" when it comes to their newest transit offering. The folks behind Prop One believe that throngs of newly minted Democrats don't need any convincing to vote yes on $18 billion worth of projects that come with more tax increases to pay for 15 or more years of light rail construction. Their idea is that today's 25-year-old will be tickled spitless to cough up the money for light rail coming into Seattle from Federal Way, Lynnwood and Overlake, if they have a chance to ride a train sometime on or after their 40th birthday. Their obsession remains light rail, with buses not really part of the picture. Yep, Prop One backers are thinking that young voters can easily be railroaded into saying yes come November. My money says they're wrong. I think the stupid, naive or simply gullible folks are the ones underestimating how young people really think. Have something to say to Ken?
