SEATTLE -- Why do we allow fear and prejudice to rule the day?

The passage of Proposition 8 in California was a stinging rebuke for homosexual couples who have become otherwise accustomed to being legally locked out of a life they deserve.

Earlier this year, the California Supreme Court overturned the state's ban on same sex marriage.

Now, there are many states that specifically ban same-sex marriage, but when voters from San Diego to San Francisco took to the ballot and passed Prop 8, California became the first state to take gay marriage away after it had been in effect.

It's no wonder that people across the nation have taken to city streets in protest.

It's no wonder because as a society that supposedly stands for equality and justice for all, we cannot continue to suppress equality and justice for some.

In a strange way, passage of Proposition 8 may have unintended benefits.

It has galvanized people, homosexual and heterosexual alike.

Connecticut recently joined Massachusetts in allowing gay couples to marry.

Vermont is poised to do the same.

I believe - I hope - the bigotry of Proposition 8 will sharply number the days that fear and prejudice are allowed to rule.
