Ken Schram: 'Tis the season

You may want to get a pencil and paper so you can take notes on the following.

Despite a protest led by a Spokane legislator, there is no Christmas tree in the state rotunda this year.

Instead, there's the "Capitol Holiday Kids' Tree," which is part of a charity drive for rural fire departments.

The nativity scene that will be on display is still called a nativity scene, and the baby in the manger is still Jesus.

Hanukkah may begin on the 22nd, but since no one asked there is no menorah going up this year.

The Freedom from Religion Foundation wanted in on the action, so there will be a billboard posted that reads "Religion is but a myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."

Word is the atheist's contribution will not be in the same vicinity as the non-Christmas tree, which arguably should be separated from the nativity scene.

We've got the politically correct doing battle with zealous Christians over whether the three wise men were following a bright star or Rudolph's nose.

We've got petty atheists and timid politicians who don't give two hoots about good will or fa la la la la, la la la la.

Yes, the spirit of the season is truly upon us.
