The 'Schrammie' Goes To: The Port Of Seattle

SEATTLE - They say timing is everything.

And for this week's "Schrammie", it's the bad timing of yet another government entity that just can't keep private, privileged, personal information safe.

So, IF there is someone -- anyone! - who is even a little bit responsible at the Port of Seattle, please, come on down.

See, the port is missing some computer discs.

Not just any discs mind you.

These disks have all sorts of personal information - including Social Security numbers - on 6,943 people who had the grave misfortune of filling out a Port of Seattle application for one thing or another.

Now, here's how the port people have sorta, kinda explained the mess.

They don't know if the discs are actually lost.

It's just that the discs can't be found.

Ain't that a knee-slappin' slice of bureaucratic B.S.!

Anyway, since the discs are at the moment "missing", the port says it'll pay for credit monitoring for those 6,943 people who are now prey to identity theft.

The bill so far: $60,000.

So: For turning the lives of 6,493 people inside out; for sticking the public with a bill that should never have been; for being incompetent, inept and downright incapable, I'd like each and every Seattle Port Commissioner to take a bow, 'cause this "Schrammie" is for you.

Have something to say to Ken? E-mail him at kenschram@komo4news.com.

And be sure to join Ken, along with John Carlson, on "The Commentators", which airs every weekday from 9-Noon on AM 570 KVI.

It's a lively exchange of information, insight and perspective with two guys who don't agree on much, but still manage to enjoy each other as they tackle issues of the day. Even better, callers are invited in on the verbal action.

I live off of Steamboat Island Rd in the Hunter Point area and went out to sit on the deck for a bit and heard an enormous Snorting Blow and a lot of splashing! It sure sounded like a whale but thought it couldn't be as the water is shallow at the end of my yard.
