A final word on the
bag tax measure that Seattle voters smothered in this week's election.
I would hope that the people who voted "no" on this stupid idea did so the basis of paying 20 cents for every plastic and paper bag they got from a supermarket, drug or convenience store.
I would further hope that recognizing the ugly environmental impact of plastic bags is not lost on us.
Honestly, I think the plastic bag should be banned outright and we go back to just using paper bag.
Yeah, I know the green freaks have almost as much disdain for paper, but their fringe views aren't a factor as far as I'm concerned.
While there's next to nothing environmentally redeeming about plastic, paper can still be recycled and will decompose if tossed into our landfills.
The truly unfortunate part of what Seattle put on the table turned the debate over to the 20-cent tax rather than just dumping plastic in favor of paper.
Cities, including Seattle, should take their cue from Edmonds.
Officials there decided to just outlaw plastic bags.
No talk of a tax; no mention of getting rid of paper sacks.
As my friend forest says: That's all I have to say about that.
