Ken Schram: Thanks for nothing
Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels is banning guns.
The state attorney general says state law doesn't give the mayor the legal authority to do that.
But Mayor 5-pennies figures what the hell, he's out of office pretty soon anyway, so why not roll the Second Amendment dice.
The mayor's gun ban went into effect this week, and will eventually affect hundreds of areas where children and families are likely to gather.
The first "no guns allowed" signs will be going up at three Seattle area community centers in a day or so.
By the first of December, the mayor says it'll be illegal to carry a gun on 82 outdoor sports courts, 213 ball fields, nine beaches and a pair of small craft centers, among other venues.
For the record, I'm not a NRA freak nor am I an anti-gun nut.
I just happen to believe that the U.S. Constitution isn't subject to the whimsical interpretations of politicians who want to parcel out freedom based on what they think is good for us.
Greg Nickels won't even be around to lose the fight that he's started.
His parting gift as the exiting mayor will be taxpayers footing the bill for what could be a host of lawsuits challenging his ill-advised and illegal gun ban.
Thanks for nothing Mr. Mayor.
