SEATTLE -- I have seen the light, brothers and sisters.

I have seen the light.

Conservative Christians want to take away the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples because they fear for the institution of marriage.

We have been given Referendum 71 as a means to protect marriage while depriving same sex couples of protection under the law for such things as pensions and hospital visitations of their loving partners.

And while I still support R-71; while I still adamantly believe we should all stand to protect the rights of same sex couples, I have come to understand the religious right's concerns about marriage in our society.

Several dozen times, the new testament speaks to the sanctity of marriage, and I have seen the light.

But it is not gay couples that threaten this sacred institution.

It is people's easy access to divorce.

So I ask that you join with me in an initiative Defending American Marriage: the DAM initiative.

I say we put before voters in this state the opportunity to ban divorce.

Step up.

Step forward.

Join me in an undertaking that strikes at the corrosive force responsible for undermining marriage in our society.

Let us come together in Defending American Marriage.

Work with me to pass this DAM initiative.

And don't forget to vote yes on R-71.
