Ken Schram: Spare me the hypocrisy
There are a lot of people pulling for "Copper."
Copper is the rabbit that's scheduled to die for having bitten a volunteer at the Pierce County Humane Society.
Over the weekend, animal rights activists showed up outside the Tacoma shelter to protest the decision to off the bunny even as offers came in from around the world to give the long-eared lopper sanctuary.
Look, I consider myself an animal lover, but this little episodic rabbit kerfluffle leaves me wondering what makes some people so whacky when it comes to all creatures big and small.
Where's all the compassion for the thousands of anonymous shelter animals that are killed each year without fanfare or publicity?
But just put a rabbit's picture in the news; give it a name and suddenly people from Sweden to Australia are provoked into making the bunny a cause.
Spare me the hypocrisy of people who keep the pet industry flourishing with billions of dollars spent annually on designer accessories for their dogs and cats, but allow publicity to dictate that a sick rabbit be reason enough to demonize an animal shelter that's making the tough decisions every day of the year.
Give me a break.
