Ken Schram: Harsh realities
"It's really hard to face homelessness."
That's a quote from a woman in an article in Monday's Seattle Times.
The woman is Fran McKinzie.
The article is written by Nicole Tsong.
What stands out about this touching story?
It's the fact that Fran McKinzie depends on the Sophia Way, the only Eastside shelter for homeless single women seeking refuge from life on the streets.
There are all of eight beds available to people like Fran at The Sophia Way.
It's both blessing and curse that I'm familiar with the issue of homeless women in our area.
Blessing because my wife is the director of housing at a local domestic violence agency.
Curse because I've become all too aware of how many women are impacted by circumstances that leave them vulnerable to the harsh realities of understated problems confronting them on a daily basis.
Women, alone and with children, fleeing the brutality of abuse and terror in what could be the house next door.
Are you Looking for a way to help others this holiday season?
Try The Sophia Way in Bellevue.
Try the Eastside Domestic Violence Program.
Try New Beginnings in Seattle, or the Domestic Abuse Women's Network in South King County.
Ease your mind while easing the plight of women, and children, in our community who will appreciate your thinking of them.
Because it really is hard to face homelessness.
