Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora reacts to a play during the second quarter of an NFL football game against the Houston Texans, Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, in Houston.
Did he really mean to say that out loud?

I thought I was hearing things when Seattle Seahawks Coach Jim Mora muttered that what the team needs is more "dirtbags."

Not exactly what you expect to hear in priggishly polite Seattle.

The fact that it's true is almost of no relevance.

Mora was verbally convulsing following the debacle in Texas last Sunday.

He was P.O.'d big time at the 34 to 7 butt kicking and called into question the offensive line's toughness.

And out popped the "dirtbags" reference.

The resulting shuddering cringe came from all those football fans who don't care that the Hawks keep losing so long as little Billy in Bothell can point adoringly at milk and cookie role models.

When Mora mentioned "dirtbags" I thought, "Uh-oh."

I figured the sensibilities of all those who stamp their feet and shout a fiesty "gosh, golly, that was a good try" on 3rd and 14 would be outraged that Mora had the audacity to put a simple truth forward.

As for me: I'd rather have a whole host of "dirtbags" taking us to the playoffs and contending for the Superbowl every year.

So, my thanks to Jim Mora for saying out loud what a lot of us have been thinking.
