Ken Schram: Happy New Year?
Happy New Year?

I'd like to believe that.

The optimist in me says I should. The cynic in me says I can't.

Here are a few political accomplishments that I think would make 2010 a bit brighter and a touch better.

State tax reform

Highlights: We need a flat rate income tax; elimination of the state's portion of the sales tax; freezing property taxes for as long as you own your home; getting rid of the business and occupation tax and replace it with a corporate income tax.

Can the governor and lawmakers muster the gumption to do what's necessary?

Or will they fall back on the same economic band aids they've gone to every other year?

I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Get tough on drunk drivers

I mean no more screwing around with giving people umpteen chances to go out to kill or maim.

Take away their license; take away their vehicles; put them in prison or in jail and on work release.

Again, I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Legalize marijuana

It's no worse than alcohol; in many ways better.

Let's regulate it and tax it.

That's a partial wish list for my 2010.

Happy New Year?

I'll wait and see.
