Ken Schram: Look past the immigration anger
It's a simple question.
Should a kid who graduates high school be given the chance to go to college?
It's becomes a volatile, controversial question when it's pointed out that the kid is living here illegally.
Congress is once again being asked to pass the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act.
Simply put, the DREAM Act would allow undocumented students who've been going to school here in the U.S. to get conditional permanent residency if they either serve in the military or go to college.
Last week, UW President Mark Emmert wrote our two U.S. senators underscoring his support for this measure.
Now I know the issue of immigration reform gets a lot of people P.O.'d.
But looking past that anger, this measure makes nothing but sense.
Why wouldn't we, as a society, continue investing in young people who've already proven they have the aptitude and drive to succeed?
Dealing with border security and the larger question of undocumented immigrants is one thing.
The DREAM Act should be treated as something else.
The simple answer to that simple question is: pass it.
