Ken Schram: A guide for voters
»Play Video
We're less than a month out from the general election.
We'll vote for a president, a senator and a brand new governor. We'll also select a whole host of people who want to serve in the state legislature.
And then there are the issues we have to decide on.
There's Tim Eyman's I-1185, continuing a requirement that a two-thirds vote of the legislature is necessary to raise taxes.
Thumbs down from me on that one. We cannot, in good economic conscience, keep handcuffing lawmakers in doing what is fiscally best for the state.
Initiative 502 would legalize, regulate, license and tax marijuana for recreational use. I'm good to go with this measure. Just like prohibition, this is an issue for states to begin leading the federal government toward more a more reasonable understanding and acceptance of marijuana use.
Initiative 1240 would introduce charter schools to our state. Around the country there has been both great success and dismal failure with charter schools. My bottom line: I can't support a concept that dilutes support and resources for public education.
Referendum 74. Say yes to 74 and say yes to marriage equality. I still don't agree with the majority deciding on the rights of a minority. That said, I can't see how the people of this state could say no to the right of same sex couples to marry.
All the above, less than a month away.

I have a ? for ken. in this resession the middle class people get hit the hardest. if you are on unemployment or state disabilaty you are really in financial trouble, so my ? is Y does the state and federal gov. take taxes out. I realize wash. has no state tax but other state do.
People, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH on these bills and candidates. DO NOT take the word of a puffed up self absorbed talking head. THINK!
2/3 majority should be standard for all things not majority 51% anything goes BS
This is the last place I'd go for information on filling out my ballot.
It's opposite day on election day. Vote for the opposite of Ken.
'Initiative 1240 would introduce charter schools to our state. Around the country there has been both great success and dismal failure with charter schools. My bottom line: I can't support a concept that dilutes support and resources for public education.'
Â
Well Ken...
Since the lottery was created by the democrats for education only, and the democrats changed the rules, and then proceeded to rape the funds for other pet projects; maybe (just MAYBE) you should rethink yer position on who is holding the purse strings and why our educational system SUCKS! 27 years of your logic ain't working so well is it? Remember the WASL? The epic failure the State said would become the envy of other public education institutions? It's broken Ken.
Â
When the brakes go out on yer car, ya don't oil 'em up to get them working again. Unless yer Chevrolet that is.
"We cannot, in good economic conscience, keep handcuffing lawmakers in doing what is fiscally best for the state."
Â
If that was the case then getting a 2/3's vote wouldn't be so difficult. Â
Yea go with ken, don't think ,just vote straight "demoncrat".
No on I 502!
@Melissa Angevine Cool! Another reader's digest mentality that never watched anyone die from Cancer! Woo Hoo! You're a cave dweller.
 @Melissa Angevine why?
chuckle,,,well,,,,we all have our opinions,,,,,I disagree with you , Ken, on 3 out of 4
Guess we'll just cancel out on those 3,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Yeah Ken, make it so the state is the drug dealer. Someone need to tell pot smokers that they are getting bent over by the state. If they really wanted for it to be legal, they should just let people grow it.Â
Â
Shram isn't anything but a propagandist for communist governments. Which is a big part of why our lives are so impoverished. All propaganda, no truth in our medias make Washingtonians marxist by proxy.
Â
Take your advice & stuff it Ken.
@Libertyinfinite Ken's column is an 'opinion' column. He states his opinion and you have the opportunity to comment, as you are doing. It doesn't matter whether you agree or not, Ken makes you think about your view and maybe, go do some research elsewhere. Â
If you want to be effective in disagreeing with him you need to provide facts or at least give an intelligent alternative. Just calling someone a communist doesn't cut it.
If you really think this state is so bad - you have the freedom to move.
@Darn it! @Libertyinfinite I don't think Ken has a right to tell us how to vote. It's our responsibility.
@justsayin  @Darn  @LibertyinfiniteI agree. He is telling us how he is voting and why. It is up to you to make your own decisions. He just gives you something to think about and/or research on your own.
@Darn it! @Libertyinfinite - it is funny how few that disagree with Ken actually use any facts, but instead either stoop to name calling or provide less reasoning than Ken does.
Â
If these folks actually want folks to pay attention, they need to at least say something intelligent.  Alas, it doesn't seem that most will...
@FormerMarineSgt  @Darn  @Libertyinfinite Really? Politics is my hobby, has been for ten years now and NONE of the posts you have on ANYTHING make sense and your so called facts? HAHAHAH!!! Have nice day....
@FormerMarineSgt  @Darn  @Libertyinfinite you mean instead of throwing words like Marxist and Communism out there when you obviously don't understand the definition of the word?In what way is schrams opinion on legal, regulated pot trying to create a classless moneyless society? In what way is his opinion trying to break social class structure?
Yeah... because Ken always uses "Facts" in his articles...
Thank God you only speak for yourself Ken...that is all...
@takncarabizniz Propaganda designed to herd voters into blindly voting in the destruction of individual liberty is communist propaganda. We Washingtonians have lived on propaganda for a good solid thirty years.Â
Â
Why do you think our medias never tell us what our governments are doing? Where our money goes, after they take it? Because they need us to be ignorant as to what they are doing to us.
Â
We didn't get this bad because we are bad people. We got this way because of communist propagandists like Ken here. He will do anything to hide from us what our governments are really doing. & pick which "stories" he writes that will elicit a pro-nanny state power agenda.
Â
Washingtonians are innocent. It's our medias that killed Washington State. & we the people need to rise against communist propaganda. & demand someone start telling the truth.
Â
The schools in Washington State for instance, are abusive to our children a majority of the time. Someone needs to fire up the human soul, from whence freedom came.
@Libertyinfinite  @takncarabizniz how are the schools in washington state abusive to our children a majority of the time? Please explain this to me.
You are wrong a yes vote Referendum 74 will restrict the rights of same sex groups to form contracts and only the state rules will run their lives. Instead of putting gays in the same lack of rights group as the married people of Washington we should re-instigate marriage in Washington State something that has been illegal for 40 years. Â Why should gays be forced to pay the marriage penalty income tax? Why should gays be taxed more under Obama care like married people? You do not expand freedom by making all equally unfree. Vote no to preserve gay rights.
@Jim McGraw. YOu are wrong. It is actually 'approve' not a yes vote which will give us gay people the right to have the same marriage laws as streight people in this state.
Â
I don't understand what the heck you are saying. Are you agianst gay marriage?
@Jim McGraw Same thing with the pot laws. Washington State is now growing & selling pot. It will also buy pot, to re-sell, for a profit. What they do is charge everyone for the card. & then, they are the dealer. They keep growing it illegal, so the state doesn't have any competition. & I think this one says that after you buy their card, if you grow it for your own use, you owe the state money in taxes. This stuff they are doing in Washington State is nuts. Someone needs to speak out. Our state is a drug dealer, just so it can rob yet another group of innocents blind.Â
 @Jim McGraw Nice try.
I think it should be settled with a coin toss. We could do it at Safeco field. We could sell tickets to be there and have a gold coin to toss. It could be a festival!
@Grumpa I avoid Safeco field. I voted "NO" on that one on that one too but they didn't listen to us back then either.....
The only one I agree with is saying no to Eyman.
@Smashquail. So it's okay to deny a group of people the right to marry?
@Smashquail - agreed.Â
Â
While most of us would like Olympia to be far more restrained with thier spending, at least some of us realize two things:
1) Eyeman is a trumped up trickster who cares not for anything but making a profit off the backs of the idealist folks who are blind enough to follow him.
2) This 2/3's vote initiative is an unconstitutional law and because of that, it's a waste of our tax money to pass it - because it will be fought AGAIN and it will lose AGAIN. The state Constitution says that the legislature needs merely a majority vote, anything stated to the contrary is a violation of the Constitution. Â
Â
You want to fix Olympia? Vote the right folks in or get the Constitution changed, stop wasting our time AND our tax money with these lies from Eyeman.Â
where do come off giving voter advice................  100% bad advice.
@BH The way I look at it, a communist propagandist like Sham can be useful only as what to do the opposite of. America got the way it is because of propagandists like him & komo communist news.Â
@Libertyinfinite @BH - Libertyinfinite - dude - the only infinite here is the infinite repetition of your claims of communism.
Â
Dude - you clearly have no clue what actual communism is.  Go find out from your mommy what it is and then come back and apologize for your mis-statements.
Â
Â
Man everyone who throws words around like "republitard" and "libtard" and "democrap" I can't get past how puerile all political threads become. How pathetic and small minded is it to devote your entire allegiance to a political party or agenda, restricting yourself by choice and unwilling to think for yourself. Nothing more than a fallacy that creates an us vs them mentality, itâs more destructive than anything. Break down the walls, you're going to agree and disagree with different things for a vast amount of reasons, which is fine! But it's when we tear each other down and segregate ourselves based on a belief system that we're afraid to stray from for one reason or another-- we stagnate as a society. Call yourself a Republican, Democrat, Liberal or whatever you feel defines your stance best, fight for what you believe in, but don't constrain yourself to that label alone.
@rattles You might enjoy reading "The Big Sort: Why the Clustering of Like-Minded America is Tearing Us Apart." Available at your local library or Kindle, hardback or paper back, if you want to own a copy.
@rattles I agree. Ken here is a communist whack job. But it's unfortunate that because we are a propagandist state in a propagandist nation, we have grown rigid, & stay within our little box of four little teeny walls, no matter if we are liberal, conservative, or green & pink polka dots.
Â
I can no longer identify myself. Most likely I am a conservative extremist. I say that freedom comes from the human soul. But today, I've got no label.Â
Â
We must rise against rigid partisanship. Myself personally, I am a deist. So being right, they wouldn't let me in. But you can't ever agree with everything down the line like communist propagandist shram here. Or do the same for the right. Especially given that Romney is so moronic, he drives us all down.Â
Â
I don't play to sides. I hope we're getting out of it. & out of falling for propaganda like kenny doll communist protector here.Â
Â
I am a native of the Seattle area. We, had KISW. We, were better. We, have a huge beautiful spirit that can't be boxed. We, are from whence freedom came. We aught not let ourselves be bound by them.Â
@rattles Well, that flies int he face of the fourth-grade bully mentality that so many posters here (and everywhere else as well, it seems) embrace: "my way or I'll threaten to beat you up."
@rattles Better yet, don't call yourself any of those things and you won't have to defend (and re-elect) your fellow label-wearers when they do dumb things. As a side benefit it frustrates the hell out of most people when they can't fit you in a little box in their mind.
Â
@polishsausage That is ideal, but if people really need to label themselves then that's their prerogative. I get how labeling things can help keep them grouped up and easy to remember, but it's gone past just being a name. As long as people are able to understand that there is no absolute, they can call themselves a wedge of cheese for all I care. Â
@rattles winner, winner chicken dinner.... Bingo! We have a winner!
One vote for I-1185 is a vote for California like policies all over again. They'll find revenue somewhere, this won't solve the problem at all. We need to elect legislators that have the guts to actually cut the bureaucracy instead of continuing wrecklessly spending because if you elect the same legislators, they will go for the same stuff and cut stuff they don't want.
@political_i Or how about just electing McKenna, who can veto the insanity of the liberal agenda. Now there's some real power people. If it's despotism you want to end, McKenna is a must. He isn't an extremist, just a realist. He won't drive us unto the Puget Sound & sink us all, like been in D.C. too long to remember how to think for himself insleey will do. Â
@Libertyinfinite @political_i -- Mckenna, the guy who wasted state tax money chasing the republican dream of Obamcare being unconstitutional.Â
Â
Yeah, he's a real 'champion' of fiscal restraint. NOT
Ken, Stop being a tool...wrt 1185 taxes can still be levied by legislators, it just requires the voters approval to take effect. Additionally, all of you who say the initiative forces compromise and setting priorities are 100% correct. Those of you that agree with Ken on I-1185 ...please seek help.
@schramalot & I suppose you expect the sky to stop being blue too? Ken stop being a tool. Like he had an American bone in his communist propagandist body.Â
Â
The way John Wayne puts it "That'll be the day..".
@Libertyinfinite @schramalot - it's funny how many folks sit there claiming that Ken's a tool, that Ken's opinion makes them mad, etc.
Â
Ken must be laughing his ___ off because these fools keep coming back and complaining about Ken.
Â
CONSTANTLY.
Â
It's like they have no life whatsoever and only exist to complain like spoiled little girls (complaints and name calling without any facts/substance/discussion-able comments)Â about Ken taking positions contrary to thier own.
@schramalot The state constitution sets specific majorities for passage of certain bills, including taxes. And specific majorities for voter passage of constitutional amendments as well.
Â
The state constitution also specifies that the state has a paramount responsibility to fund certain things - especially the public schools - despite all efforts of a certain party and a certain initiative king in particular to handcuff all such efforts. The constitution treats schools as having an overriding priority above even law enforcement and highways.
Â
What the state constitution does not provide - and I sort of wish it did - is specific personal penalties when state legislators fail to meet their constitutional obligations - or when individuals keep bringing costly and unconstitutional initiatives to the fore which then must be disposed by very costly lawsuits and court action. I am getting especially tired of Tim I'm-an-idiot wasting tax dollars on his flood of pulp fiction, fantasy and usurping of the constitutional authority and responsibility of the elected legislature. He's like a professional sports player who insists of trying to rewrite all the rules to suit his whim and personal strengths.
@JLS1950  @schramalot Eyman has been one of the very few in this state to try to somehow limit the power of our liberal legislatures. He wouldn't have to do so, if Washingtonians would take the initiative, themselves, to pay attention to what our governments are doing. You are tired of the costs of Eyman works? Well guess what, there has been zero restraint on the vast majority of Washington States' governments for a good thirty years. I am tired of paying to have a social worker installed on every corner. We pay too much for everything our governments do in this state. It costs ten times more to get the state to do something, than private companies. Why is that?
Â
Because the state, Washington State knows that no one is watching it. It will commit despotism at every turn. & limits on Washington States' governments? Who would limit them. Tim Eyman perhaps. But our electorate is propagandist led into blindly worshiping democrat party power. & I am sick of paying social workers to be on every corner. It taking thirty state workers, five huge trucks & three days to change a light bulb. I am sick & tired of them doing whatever they want, when ever they want.Â
Â
Who pays them to operate like they invariably have a blank check? We do. & why? Because in Washington State, propaganda is king. We are kept ignorant by our medias. We pay because we are never told the truth. (I may have exaggerated on how much it takes the state to change a light bulb, but the social workers her, just look at your corners people. We pay for this.)Â
@JLS1950 Point...But Ken is still a tool
@schramalot Ken stop being a tool? That's like telling a poodle not to be a dog.....
