Ken Schram: It's time to do the right thing

Momentum.

That's what Gov. Chris Gregoire has provided by putting her political shoulder to the issue of marriage equality here in our state.

The governor says that she wants Washington to be the 7th state in the nation to legalize gay marriage and as such will introduce a bill in the upcoming legislative session.

It's been two years since the "everything but marriage law" was passed by lawmakers and affirmed by voters, and as the governor noted, it's now time to do the right thing.

Doing that "right thing" will not happen without opposition.

Conservative Christians are already talking about how to derail the political drive toward same sex marriage, including lobbying legislators and perhaps mounting an effort to require a public vote on the matter.

For me, the concept of having the majority vote on civil rights for a minority makes no sense, but first the measure would have to clear the legislature.

As the governor so aptly noted: It is time to do the right thing.

It is time to recognize the injustice of denying equality to men and women who simply want the legitimacy and legal standing that comes with a marriage license.

I know the governor's momentum will help make that happen.
