Ken Schram: Kudos to those investigating the Keller case

SEATTLE -- We'll never know why he did it. Even if he hadn't put a gun to his own head, we may never have known.

Authorities say that Peter Keller killed his wife and daughter; set the family home on fire and then retreated to a survivalist-style bunker on a Cascade mountainside.

The manner in which this investigation was handled by King County Sheriff's deputies and Seattle Police got me to thinking.

There's been a rash of criticism surrounding area law enforcement over the past few years. Incidents in which cops and deputies have been scrutinized, analyzed and second-guessed.

Certainly, some of the issues raised have had merit, but throughout it all, the great number of men and women who put on a law enforcement uniform just continued to go out every day and simply to their job.

In the case of Peter Keller, they kept the public informed, but did not provoke panic.

They did an amazing job of locating the bunker; showed great control over how they attempted to take Keller into custody.

I point this out because all too often the only feedback law enforcement gets is when it's thought something was done wrong.

They don't get props for how they handle accident victims, or victims of crime.

They don't often get recognized for their professionalism.

This shouldn't be one of those times.
