State Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen
SEATTLE -- A degree of courage is beginning to poke its nose out from under the political blanket.

But some cowards still have the covers pulled over their heads.

And so I’d like to invite Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen to pucker up, start whistling through the graveyard, and come on down.

Mary Mary is being quite contrary on the issue of marriage equality. With state lawmakers looking at legalizing same sex marriage in our state, Mary Mary is a surprising no go.

In a bow to her evangelical constituents, the otherwise progressive Democrat has timidly proclaimed that this is an issue that should not be pushed by politicians, but rather put to a vote of the people.

Given Mary Mary’s posturing, blacks would still be colored people with separate drinking fountains.

Not that I expected marriage equality to sail through the legislature with nary a dissenting voice, but a cowardly hiccup from someone of Mary Mary’s political stature is a discouraging surprise worth noting.

Which is why I think Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen should take a bow, because this “Schrammie” is for her.
