Schrammie: Seattle schools owe how much on new district HQ?
SEATTLE -- It is stunningly grandiose, built with the promise that however much it cost, it would pay for itself.
Not so.
Someone at the Seattle School District needs to quit sharpening pencils and come on down, I'm just not quite sure who that might be.
Back when Seattle school officials laughingly thought they'd always have lots and lots of money to throw around, the decision was made to construct a palatial headquarters building.
At the time, the decision was roundly scrutinized and criticized but plans went forward anyway.
Having coughed up $42 million in payments so far, the district still owes another $50 million on its sprawling glass palace and no one seems to know where that money will come from.
Among the possibilities: Ask voters to pass a levy to finance the debt.
Fat chance of that happening.
Hey, how's this for an idea: Instead of sticking students in portable classrooms, we get those portables for district officials?
That way the glass palace can be sold with the money then re-directed to actual educational needs.
As for this week's "Schrammie", the district dolts who created this mess are long gone, so I guess I'll just have Santa slip this into someone's Christmas stocking.
