The Schrammie: Stealing one more element of childhood away

For just about as long as there have been classrooms, there have been classroom pets.

A gerbil here, a turtle there.

But maybe not so much in the Port Angeles school district.

I'd like to invite the Port Angeles School Board to step off the hamster wheel and come on down.

Last week, in a 4-1 vote, the board voted to ban classroom pets out of concern for student health and safety.

No more rabbits.

No more snakes.

No more gerbils.

Seems there were complaints after some teachers let their dogs run loose in school hallways, prompting a school board review that found just about any animal in a classroom is just too much of a risk.

With one board member calling gerbils nothing more than "varmints," the dictate to ban everything but fish will be finalized next week.

So for stealing one more element of childhood away; for continuing the never-ending quest toward a namby-pamby nanny state and for simply forgetting that a classroom is not a cocoon...

I'd like the Port Angeles School Board to take a bow, because this "Schrammie" is for you.
