The Schrammie: Waiting for marijuana 'clarity' in Everett

Political timidity is at the root of this week's "Schrammie."

So if skittish city officials up in Everett would stop making origami animals out of roll-your-own Zig Zag paper, I'd like them to come on down.

Everett city leaders seem poised to extend a moratorium on medical marijuana gardens.

I'm told they need more 'clarity' on how to regulate said agricultural endeavors.

But the real issue is their hand wringing over the conflict between state law and federal law.

State law gives cities the ability to zone, license and establish health and safety guidelines on collective medical marijuana gardens.

Federal law says marijuana is a Schedule I drug with no accepted medical value in treatment.

State law says it's okay for sick people to grow their own medicine.

Federal law says sick people must suffer because pot remains one toke over the legal line.

Everett city leaders are with the feds on the let them suffer side.

Other cities - Bellevue, Seattle and Mukilteo, for example - have managed to find 'clarity' and implement our state's medical marijuana law.

But Everett officials are too timid.

So as they shake in their bureaucratic boots, I'd like them to take a bow, because this "Schrammie" is for them.
