The Schrammie: Why the secrecy in rowdy cops investigation?
»Play Video
Does the end justify the means?
Not when the means involves a public agency cloaking itself in secrecy.
So if Bellevue Police Chief Linda Pillo would quit flashing her badge, I'd like her to come on down.
Back in September, a couple of intoxicated Bellevue cops on their way to a Seahawks game got into a tussle with a Seattle police officer over littering.
Flashing their badges, the Bellevue officers cussed the SPD officer out and were so intimidating that the SPD officer called in a supervisor.
Eventually allowed to just go on their way, the Bellevue cops got to their stadium seats and began dropping F-bombs while acting in an obnoxious manner.
They were eventually kicked out of the game and one officer drove home drunk.
Now we have Chief Pillo saying an internal investigation of the incident leaves the cops demoted in both rank and salary.
Probably a proper level of admonishment.
I say "probably" because Chief Pillo is not releasing details of the investigation; not releasing the extent to which the whole matter was looked into.
It leaves people with the sense that there's some sort of cover-up going on.
Should the officers have been fired?
We don't know because we don't know the thoroughness of the investigation because Chief Pillo won't tell us.
And for that, the chief should take a bow, because this "Schrammie" is for her.

Sorry all you anti Ken ppl are f'ing high. One of them was DRIVING DRUNK. And not fired? Please, you don't have to be held criminally accountable to be fired from a PD. You don't even need to be charged with a crime. That is what the WSCJTC calls disqualifying misconduct in its peace officer de-certification process. I'm disgusted by the inaction of looking the other way on the DUI. You want to act like an ass, go for it, you want to run your mouth, go for it, you want to tell ppl your a cop, go for it, you want to drive drunk, go to f'ing hell. Go tell a a family member of the victim of a DUI fatality that 4 weeks is good enough. Absolutely disgusting.
While I think they got off with not even a hard hand slap in the anti-cop culture Ken has helped to create I am not surprised that they are keeping as much information under wraps as possible. The ambulance chasing lawyers would have a field day with all the cases they have been involved with. I do not think that this dumb act is a true reflection as to their behavior on the job. Just look at the normal crowed that shows up at the gamesâ¦.
Interesting. I do wish Mr. angry Ken the best, but I did ask Brian Johnson to take Schram with him.
Â
You can blame me.Â
Â
KOMO will probably find someone else more controversial and like Ken, cast in leftist concrete.
Well, at least these guys didn't get promoted to the SWAT team - you know, the guys with the sniper rifles!
Fired? no, a ticket yes! obviously a couple. Did anyone know schools pull the same hide and seek game? as a parent, id like to know exactly whats going on .I guess, too the best of any ones knowledge.
I am not shock by the behavior of the Officers involved and how their boss swept it under the rug. I have zero faith in the local LEOs to do the right thing...I would be shock if the BPD officers acted like human beings and their Chief stood up for the citizens instead of the thugs in her department.Â
Even though I disagree with Ken a lot, I appreciate his ability to bring a different perspective to many issues. BIG MISTAKE KOMO. I have ZERO reason to read your site anymore as Ken was one the big reasons to stop by.Â
I would have fired their sorry arses. Â They are "supposed" to be representatives of our LEO community, not acting like petulant college worms. Â And, although we disagreed on MOST subjects, like a previous poster said, losing a job sux! Â May you find peace and long life in whatever you do. Â I wish no ill will upon anyone, especially in this time of year. Â Good luck Ken.
Schram leaving KOMO? As he has grown older, he is less shrill and less socialist/liberal. Maybe KOMO is afraid his increasing rationality will hurt the city"s corrupt environment.Â
Perhaps they know if the media get hold of it, it wil be blown out of proportion and used to make the police look like evil thugs. That seems to be the purpose of every newscast I see lately.
Â
Ken,
Â
The few times I agreed with you, well let's say it is under 3 digits. Some times you bet. Most often, nope.
Â
Regardless, losing a job stinks. Stinks for all of us who work hard and I know you do too.
Â
Old saying, doors close but others open. I am sure you are fine and all will go well. Take a vacation and enjoy.
Â
Blessings, health and long life to you Mr. Schram. We may not agree in many areas, but I would put it on the line for your right to do so sir.
Ken, regardless of how frequently you are disagreed with, you will be missed. Â Thank you for all your years and I wish you the best.
As to the subject matter, cover-up doesn't surprise me. Â I think that officers should be held to a higher standard than most folks, since they are the ones punishing us for our behavior. Â Unfortunately the reality is that it's very much an us vs. them situation, and the higher-ups are going to do whatever they can to keep their cops away from public scrutiny. Â C'est la vie.
Yeah its a shame Ken got the boot but all MSM companies don't like true editorial content like Ken's. Just a sign of the times and why so many of us are moving to the web to try and get true media content. Time for you to retire after 35 years anyway Ken. Set back and enjoy life some.
Same union or affiliate?
Sorry to hear about your dismissal Mr. Schram. The world has gotten to PC for an honest opinion. I wish you luck in the future and hopefully you always speak your mind. Seattle has lost another great voice in consecutive days with The Gasman leaving KJR tomorrow.
Ken,
Â
Just saw where you are leaving. This is a sad day in Seattle media.

Ken, you can thank a union somewhere for the review process being closed door, it isn't the police agency. That sort of stuff gets written into contracts. And according to press reports, the reassignment and drop in income was significant. I think the outcome was OK as there was a financial bite assigned and a loss of prestige by being removed from a specialty unit.
@Citizen#3457899654 of course unions aren't needed because there really concerned people like you who will give them fair deal...oh wait that's why there are unions. BTW, why don't you publish your personal file.
If it had been a private citizen, they would of been charged with drunk and disorderly conduct at the very least. A police officer driving home drunk, and it is known? Disgusting. Guess the "brotherhood" always sticks together, as usual. And then try and sweep it under the table. "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely". Always a way for our law enforcement and justice system to attempt to take care of their own, and not the public. Again beyond disgusting.Â
I don't want you to leave, Ken...not right.
I agree... Yeah, probably the correct level of punishment given what we know. They were publicly drunk, loud, profane, obnoxious and abusive (hmmm, perhaps we should expect a little more of them?) but If it is found any cop flashed a badge to intimidate someone (let alone another LEO) it represents a danger that is far more serious and should be punished more severely. Sorry to see that KOMO is eliminating your position Ken... we have agreed and disagreed over the years but you have integrity... more than I am witnessing from your employer.
@B747-8i It is a fact that on more than one occasion that day they did use their badges to intimidate both the Seattle officer, and civilian patrons at the game. this is stated in the P.I. article today.
Had this been a "private" citizen you would have been arrested for harrassing a police officer. Â Another fine example of how the thin blue line protects its own and why the SPD is under scrutiny by the justice dept. Â Hey when does the Bellevue PD get this honor. Soon by the sounds of it
Ken, that's an easy one and so obvious -Â It's "THE CULTURE OF THE BROTHERHOOD."
Here is what I don't understand. These officers made a mistake, an error in judgement. Based on Ken's opinion and what I've read in the comments so far it seems like most people want these individuals to lose their careers over this. Losing highly regarded positions and in one case a demotion is a serious consequence.Â
Â
As reported the punishment probably fits the "crime". The reprimand will probably follow these officers their entire careers, limiting opportunities and costing them lots of money into the future. Let them get back to work.
@RightPerspective Drive drunk, and "let them get back to work". You disgust me.
@RightPerspective Nobody said they can't work, I'm sure there are burgers that need to be flipped somewhere. Police officers should be held to a higher standard. Flashing their badges and trying to intimidate another officer , and then driving drunk? It's a disgrace they weren't locked up and fired.
@Cooter_Brown You don't interact with reality very often, do you? You're talking about somebody's career and livelihood. Perhaps a wife and children. Because of an error in judgement they should be reduced to part time minimum wage jobs?Â
Â
Thank goodness you've never done anything stupid.Â
@BocaBob AMen to that. And don't try to spin some BS RPers, about having to charge them with a crime. Not necessary, all that is needed to terminate and de-cert an officer in WA state is disqualifying misconduct. DUI, whether it appears in court or not, is such conduct. Go tell a family member of the victim of a fatality DUI to "Let them get back to work". Very classy.Â
Â
integrity is inherent to the job. they lost it . DUi is inexcusable for an officer. As well domestic violence . Both should be reasons to be terminated. There are plenty of qualified better people looking to get into law enforcement .
"I say "probably" because Chief Pillo is not releasing details of the investigation; not releasing the extent to which the whole matter was looked into."
Â
Sorry to be a grammar enforcer, but this is the wrong way to use a semi colon. Semi colons join independent clauses, not an independent clause and a dependent clause. Thank you.Â
Thank you, now resist what you are "sorry" for and try to stay on-topic. This is not English Class.
@lakeview Semicolon is one word, not two. As a "grammar enforcer," you should probably take note of that.
@lakeview I hate colons and semicolons and should I get GrammarPoliced, this will be the impetus.
Â
Ken, you got this one right. Intimidating fellow officers and citizens and drunk driving while off duty is unacceptable, what is their bound of acceptable actions while on duty? Police Chief Linda Pillo release of the internal investigation without questioning is absurd.
Sounds like the punishment is in line with the crime. It was just littering and being obnoxious. Yeah they should have acted more like adults but I just don't expect much out of public employees any more.
@Blindman Littering, being obnoxious, and driving drunk. Do you know how to read? Oh it didn't make it to court? Doesn't matter, you can be fired from a PD and never be charged with a crime.Â
It's all the drunk driving and speeding tickets by police officers that are "covered up" or "forgotten about" that should be made public.
There were no charges filed against these officers Ken, therefore it is not a public matter. These are simply allegations, and the Bellevue Police Department dealt with it by reprimanding both officers. Thats enough, leave it alone.
@northwestsurfer Wrong. Criminal charges are not needed for a PD to terminate an officer. The WSCJTC can de-cert an officer for qualifying misconduct. Which admittedly driving drunk is. Take your monday morning lawyer bullcrap somewhere else. Driving drunk is inexcusable. 4 weeks is NOTHING. Go tell a family member of a victim of a fatality DUI that these are just allegations. Disgusting. Â
@PacificNWRunner Ha, thats pretty funny. Where did I ever say that criminal charges are needed to terminate an officer? I didnt. In fact, I knew a guy who joined King County Sheriff's Department a few years back and was terminated within a few months, not for any criminal misconduct. Maybe your wife or boyfriend just left you, I dont see what your anger is all about, but take it somewhere else.
Ken's problem was that the investigation was not made public. My point was that they were reprimanded and that they were not charged with anything so it is not a public affair as you feel it should be. I did not say they were innocent or did nothing wrong; however this isnt England in the dark ages; unless you are brought up on charges in our society, generally you are afforded some rights. Sorry chief, but there isnt going to be a witchhunt.
Hey Ken, lets' see your personal file. Until then, why don't you keep your toy. Oh btw, a demotion and removal from a specialty team will cost these two thousands of dollars plus multiple thousands by the city to replace them. And a crime wasn't even committed.
@Common Sense So these officers were punished for no reason?
Â
That's a first.
It is a personnel matter and personnel matters are almost always kept completely private. If not, the affected parties can AND DO sue the employer.
@Furd Your right it was a personal matter right up until they flashed their public employee badges, from that point on it became a public matter.
@Brett Jeffery Personnel, not personal. It was a matter between employer and employee. These matters ARE private no matter if the employer is a public entity (city and department) or a private company.
Ken, you're leaving KOMO? Say it ain't so!
Jeez Ken. Not everything a PD does is subject to your personal scrutiny. They investigated, the punishments were meted out (will cost the participants thousands of $$$) and you want to second guess what is going on? Its done, its over. Move on to something else why don't you?.
Sorry Ken, that last sentence proved too true. Will miss your rantings/blather on this site.
Â
Hope the future opens up for you. Fair winds...
