Want to visit Astoria-Warrenton? Download these free audio tours
By Shannon L. CheesmanASTORIA, Ore. - Even if you've been to the Astoria/Warrenton area before, there's a good chance you haven't seen everything there is to see. I was just there a few months back while I traveled the coastline for a special Beach Week series (that's me in the picture below - sitting on the biggest anchor I've ever seen in my life outside the maritime museum in Astoria).
At the time, I thought I had made a pretty good run at checking out the notable attractions (like the Peter Iredale shipwreck, Fort Stevens State Park, the sea lions at E. Mooring Basin and the Goonies house), but there was a lot that I missed. Or so I discovered when I ran across a mention of some free, self-guided audio tours and accompanying maps that were recently launched on the Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce's Web site. What a cool idea - and what great tools to take along if you plan on spending time visiting these towns on the north Oregon coast. I just might have to go back.
There are two different tours available for download to your iPod or MP3 player - one features local historical attractions and another shows you where movie scenes from Free Willy, Kindergarten Cop, Short Circuit and more were filmed. Printable maps make it easy to find the locations mentioned in the audio tour.
