PORTLAND, Ore. - Ski resorts across the United States will be taking part in the 10th annual National Safety Awareness Week, which starts Jan. 17 and runs through Jan. 23.

"Safety remains a top priority throughout the season for ski resorts and Safety Week is an opportunity for both guests and employees to gain a better understanding of the importance of personal responsibility on the slopes," Michael Berry, president of the National Ski Areas Association, said in a press release.

Activities for the week are centered on the key elements of safe skiing and riding, as defined by the National Ski Areas Association:

  • Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
  • People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
  • You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above.
  • Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
  • Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
  • Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
  • Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.

Special events and activities are planned at ski resorts across the nation.  Contact your favorite ski resort for information on what they have planned.  You can find an official list of events here.
