AMMON, Idaho (AP) — State wildlife officials are trying to figure out how dozens of mallard ducks died along a ditch in the eastern Idaho town of Ammon.

The first set of dead water fowl were found Monday, and Idaho Fish and Game officials say the death toll has reached 175.

Wardens returned to the ditch Tuesday to gather water samples. They found several live ducks, but no more dead ones.

Department veterinarian Mark Drew says preliminary evidence suggests the culprit is aspergillosis, the same fungal infection that killed about 2,500 ducks near Oakley in 2006.

The fungus is commonly found growing on dead leaves, stored grain and compost piles. The fungus can cause respiratory tract infection in birds that inhale the spores.
