EUGENE, Ore. - Public input is being sought by the National Geographic Society as they get ready to launch a new Geotourism MapGuide project for the Central Cascades region.

The Central Cascades region is designated as the territory stretching from Mt. Rainier in Washington to Crater Lake in Oregon.

Up to 150 geotourism sites throughout the Central Cascades region will be featured on a printed, full-color map/brochure, as well as on an interactive Web site.

According to the project Web site, geotourism is defined as "tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place - its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the well-being of its residents."

Nominations of the region's natural, cultural and historical sites and experiences that best exemplify the Central Cascades region are being sought.  Some suggestions include:

• Waterfalls
• Nature trails
• Geological formations
• Cultural events
• Heritage museums
• Farms
• Locally-owned and operated restaurants that are distinct and representative of the region
