TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — With a new administration in charge, the U.S. Department of Interior is taking a second look at a recent decision to drop gray wolves in the Great Lakes and Northern Rockies from the endangered list.

A spokesman said Wednesday the department has rescinded at least temporarily a regulation issued last week that would change the wolf's status in both regions. It was among many rule changes the Bush administration pushed through in its final days.

President Barack Obama ordered a review of those 11th-hour changes after taking office Tuesday.

The Interior Department says it will decide whether to re-issue the rule, modify it or permanently withdraw it.

Officials last week said Great Lakes and Northern Rockies wolves have recovered from near-extinction and no longer need federal protection.
