Permanent fence now in place where 3-year-old nearly tumbled off cliff
By KATU Web StaffCANNON BEACH, Ore. - A permanent fence has been put in place where a 3-year-old girl nearly fell off a cliff. The incident, which was captured on video, happened last summer while the Pitton family and some cousins were enjoying some nice weather at the Ecola State Park overlook along Highway 101.
She landed just inches from the cliff's precipice and had to grab onto plants to keep from going over the edge. An adult cousin quickly hopped the fence and brought her to safety. The video of the narrowly averted tragedy prompted the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to put up a temporary cyclone fence while they waited to get materials to build a more permanent barrier. A vinyl fence is now in place, which replaces the chain link fence. A spokesperson for the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department said they are also working on a project to put in a better viewing platform in that area. |
