Eat & Drink
Taken as a whole, Washington wine industry has a reach. From the farmers, wineries, tasting rooms, production facilities, bars, and restaurants; the amount of people and business impacted by our state’s wine industry is vast.
Next weekend will be a celebration of the Washington wine industry with the Auction for Washington Wines - to benefit the non-profit arm of the industry - and the events throughout the weekend look rather enticing.
This is the 27th year of the Auction of Washington Wines (AWW) and this year’s event will benefit Seattle Children’s Hospital and WSU’s Viticulture and Enology programs. From August 14 through August 16, Chateau Ste. Michelle will be the host venue for the Auction of Washington Wines. Events are throughout the weekend and ticket prices vary to each of the events. They are on sale now and the Picnic & Barrel Auction is the kickoff event. Hurry, tickets are going fast. Here is more information on the events for this year’s festivities:
Picnic & Barrel Auction – Thursday August 17th at 4 .p.m at Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville
The Picnic & Barrel Auction ushers in the AWW weekend. There will be over 40 wineries participating and a slew of food provided by the culinary team from Tulalip Casino & Resort. What should make for a fun evening and afternoon is trying the futures and barrel samples from our region’s wineries. Coupled with the auction component, you could come away with cases of something you were particularly taken by. Or you can just eat and drink a lot of wine.
Winemaker Dinner Series – Friday, August 15th at 6:30 p.m. at private residences
The Winemaker Dinner Series sounds extravagant on the surface, but dig a little deeper and you can envision a unique dinner experience. The gist is this; a private residence in a picturesque locale, as the host, with an area chef complimented by prominent wineries. You could have a dinner prepared by the likes of John Sundstrom of Lark or Shane Ryan of Matt’s in the Market. Wineries that are participating include Figgins, Avennia, Force Majeure, Leonetti, or Hedges. Most of the dinners have sold out, but there are a few that are still open.
Columbia Winery Charity Run & Walk – Saturday, August 16th at 8:30 a.m.
This 10K Race and 5K Fun Run & Walk winds itself through Woodinville wine country. Proceeds from the benefit run supports uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s Hospital. At this AWW event you’ll get fit, get good karma, and partake in the post-run festivities. This is an all ages event so feel free to wake up your kids to have them go for a morning run instead of sleeping in.
The Wine Gala – Saturday, August 16th at 5 p.m.
The Wine Gala. The grand finale of the weekend. The folks at the Auction of Washington Wines call it the ultimate party. At this event, you’ll partake in a coursed menu with winemakers seated at every table. Chefs will hit you with their best shot, with live music and the auction cap the weekend. In taking a look at this year’s menu, I want to taste everything.
