The Walrus and the Carpenter reopens after sous chef killed in bank robbery

Cody Spafford, sous chef of Ballard restaurant The Walrus and the Carpenter, was killed last week by police after attempting to rob a Wells Fargo bank in Madison Park.  The restaurant reopened last night, with proceeds going to The Recovery Cafe to honor Spafford and his struggle with addiction.

The Walrus and the Carpenter posted the above picture and this message on their Facebook page yesterday:

"Cody Spafford was a beloved member of our family. He was unassuming, gracious, and kind. He was talented and hard working. Cody lifted our spirits and made us laugh. Even now, it is hard to think about Cody without smiling. To know Cody was to love him.

We now understand that in recent months, Cody was privately struggling with addiction. We do not know if something more specific triggered the uncharacteristic and desperate actions Cody took on April 3rd.

We are left with many unanswered questions. We know only that our lives are better for having known Cody. He touched us all, and he will be deeply missed.

Our hearts are broken, but we are strengthened by the comfort and support we've received from our friends and family. We are grateful to be part of such a caring and compassionate community. Thank you.

As we prepare to open our doors this evening, we thank our guests in advance for their sympathy and understanding. To honor Cody, we will be donating the proceeds from this week to Recovery Cafe, a local organization focused on addiction counseling and services. If you would like to join us in giving, please visit (www.recoverycafe.org)"

All profits this week will go towards The Recovery Cafe in Spafford's honor.
