Tucked on a desk in the corner of a condo in downtown Seattle, one of the fastest growing Seattle Etsy shops is emerging.
Valerie Nethery started LilyEmme Jewelry in her condo above the convention center in 2009. Lily is the name of her younger sister, whose middle initial is "M".
"I wanted the name of the company to be something in my life that I knew would be a constant," said Nethery. "She just recently found out the name comes from her - and she was so excited!"
While the company is several years old, Nethery said it really only took off last year selling wedding rings.
"People love knowing their rings were made in Seattle," said Nethery. "I'm making rings for a woman right now who lives in San Diego but is from Seattle, and it's really important to her that her rings are from her hometown."
Nethery makes all her jewelry by hand, using refiners that deal exclusively in 100% recycled metals. Her Etsy shop has had over 700 orders to date, and while the majority are wedding rings, she also makes earrings, necklaces, bangles and cuffs.
"The funny thing is that I don't really wear that much jewelry!" said Nethery, whose hands are noticably bare. "But my style is very simple, and I think you can see that in the line."
It's a lot of work for one person - but never fear, Nethery doesn't work alone. She has the help of Omar, Chrysanthemum and Gregor (her fur babies).
"I went totally full time with this just a few weeks ago," said Nethery. "It was scary! But I've never worked harder in my life, working for myself."
While still just a desk in her apartment, Nerthery has dreams of getting her own studio one day. And with the way her business is going, we think that's going to happen sooner rather than later!
