It's an understatement to say that Seattle has fallen completely and utterly into the farm-to-table, sustainable living/eating/breathing phenomenon. But when you live in an apartment in the city, it's kind of hard to grow your own veggies. Enter Seattle Urban Farm Company.
SUFCo has been in business since 2007 and operates off the "design, build, maintain" mantra. You guessed it - they design beautifully landscaped garden for apartment complexes, restaurants and residences, build them, and then even send in people weekly to maintain them.
"This is probably our most successful example of a rooftop community farm," said Jessica Roundy, an Urban Farmer & Landscape Designer with SUFCo.
Built in 2013, the rooftop farm is not only beautiful but also extremely productive.
"Instead of each person in the complex having a tiny plot of the garden, we're able to grow large scale amounts of things that would be impossible to do individually," said Roundy.
The garden is 1,000 square feet, and a SUFCo farmer visits to help maintain it twice a week. They trim, plant, water, and adjust the "Ready to harvest!" signs so tenants know what can be picked and what is still growing.
"Anyone who lives here can come up and pick anything that's ready at any time," said Roundy. "We do all the hard work, and they reap the benefits!"
