The Trouble with Common Moisturizers

If you’re using moisturizer as part of your skincare routine, give yourself a pat on the back. Moisturizers are incredibly important, especially once your hit your 30s. Around this age, the skin on your face begins to lose its ability to moisturize itself. Because of this, most adults need some form of moisturizer supplement, but how do you know if you’re choosing the right one?

Most moisturizers you find on drugstore shelves or department store display cases employ chemicals, called humectants. The humectants sit on the surface of the skin and attract environmental moisture from the air like dry sponges. Once the humectants are full of water, the skin is “asked nicely” to absorb some of that water. The problem with this is the skin’s epidermal barrier is designed to keep stuff out, including water. As a result, the skin doesn’t take in most of the water absorbed by the humectants; the water just sits on the surface. This means your skin is not as well moisturized as it should be.

One way to combat this problem is to get the humectants past the moisture barrier and encourage water to move from the nonvisible layers of the face into the skin. This will accomplish two things – first, all the water actually gets very efficiently absorbed into the skin so it’s better moisturized and plumped (which hides fine lines and wrinkles). Second, by coaxing water from the nonvisible layers of the face, those layers are made to look tighter, without changing the structure or function of the skin or face.

There is at least one moisturizer on the market that does this. Dr. Justin Piasecki, a plastic surgeon with unique worldwide expertise in both skin cancer/skin health and cosmetics, developed a daily anti-aging moisturizer that combines a powerful sunscreen and hyaluronic acid, a natural ingredient that works with the elastin and collagen in the skin to add elasticity and hydrate skin. His goal is not only to protect the face from risks of skin cancer and early aging, but make the face look better in the process.
