Celebrate Spring with The Butchart Gardens and Clipper Vacations

Spring has sprung and there’s no better way to welcome the season than a trip on a Victoria Clipper to see The Butchart Gardens. Your trip begins when you board one of Clipper Vacations’ high-speed catamarans at Pier 69 in downtown Seattle. During your journey you’ll be able to take in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, from the Olympic Mountains to quaint island villages. You’ll arrive in downtown Victoria’s Inner Harbour in less than three hours, where the sightseeing begins as soon as you step ashore.

One of Victoria’s most well-known and popular attractions, The Butchart Gardens, began in 1904 as Jennie Butchart’s attempt to turn the large pit in her backyard from her husband’s cement industry work, into something beautiful. By towing in topsoil by horse and cart, she succeeded in turning the limestone quarry into the Sunken Garden.

Over the years it expanded to include a Japanese Garden, Italian Garden, Rose Garden, Mediterranean Garden and a Concrete Lawn Walk, and was given to the Butchart’s grandson Ian on his 21st birthday. The Gardens remained in the family and, in fact, Jennie and Robert Butchart’s great granddaughter still privately owns it.

Today, the gardens are open every single day of the year with over a million bedding plants in 900+ varieties blooming from March through October. People come from all over the world year-round to see the beauty of the Gardens.

If the 152,000 tulip bulbs, 82,000 daffodil bulbs, and 66,000 hyacinths and crocuses aren’t enough for you, there is also the special Jennie Butchart tulip, developed for the Gardens’ 100th anniversary. The Gardens also boast entertainment every night of the week from July through August. This includes anything from the Victoria Symphony to Celtic, jazz or folk music. Afternoon tea is served at the original Butchart’s home every day of the year and Firework Saturdays, complete with gourmet picnics, start the first weekend of July and run every week through the end of August.
