SEATTLE -- The University of Washington is holding a constest for a permantant name for its dog mascot.

Previous dogs have all had a unique name, and with the retirement of "Spirit," the current dog, the school said it wants something that will stick.

"Through our discussion with fans over the last few years, it's become obvious that name recognition is an issue with our live mascot program," said Brad McDavid, director of athletic bands who oversees the live mascot.

Fans can submit name ideas online through October 9, and those names will be whittled down to a short list for a public online vote beginning October 20.

The winning name will be revealed at the football game against UCLA on November 15.
