Apple Cup: Cougars rally to stun Huskies 31-28 in OT

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Mike Leach looked around and in an instant the mob was already closing in, heading for midfield and encircling the Washington State coach.
After a season of failing to meet expectations and negative attention, the Cougars finally got the kind of celebration they expected to be common when Leach was hired a year ago.
"I was kind of amazed how quick all those fans got out there on the field," Leach said. "Sometimes it takes them a little while. It didn't take them very long."
Andrew Furney kicked a 27-yard field goal on Washington State's first possession of overtime, and the Cougars overcame an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to stun rival Washington 31-28 in the Apple Cup on Friday, snapping an eight-game losing streak.
It was the largest comeback ever in the 105 meetings between the schools and a bright moment in an otherwise dark season on the Palouse. Leach was supposed to take Washington State to a bowl game because that was all he ever did at Texas Tech. The Cougars were going to be the talk of the Pac-12 because of their high-flying passing game, bringing excitement back to a program with little of that for much of the last decade.
Instead, the Cougars wallowed through eight straight losses, some competitive, some embarrassing, coupled with off-field issues that included claims of abuse by coaches from former star wide receiver Marquess Wilson.
In the early evening darkness, as Martin Stadium was blanketed with crimson and gray fans and school president Elson Floyd on a podium at midfield addressed the crowd with the Apple Cup trophy back in hand, none of that matter.
"We kicked the Huskies out of the place," Floyd screamed over the speaker system.
Washington State played with intensity and a chip. They especially wanted to give injured defensive end Travis Long a chance to hold the Apple Cup trophy after he missed Friday's game, the first game missed in his entire college career.
Long limped out on crutches before the game to be honored with the rest of the seniors. He concluded his last game at Washington State holding the trophy in the locker room.
In a rivalry known for unpredictability, the 2012 version will rank among the tops in Apple Cup lore. Washington led 28-10 after Bishop Sankey's second touchdown run late in the third quarter, but the Huskies wilted under self-inflicted turnovers and penalties coming back in favor of the Cougars.
Washington (7-5, 5-4) had a chance to win on the final play of regulation, but Travis Coons' 35-yard field goal attempt was wide right after a bad snap.
Then on the first play of overtime, Washington quarterback Keith Price threw an interception that defensive lineman Kalafitoni Pole nearly returned for a game-ending touchdown, only to be caught at the 5.
The Cougars (3-9, 1-8 Pac-12) took possession and, after picking up a first down on a throw from Jeff Tuel to Brett Bartolone, Furney kicked a 27-yard field goal, leading to a crush of crimson and gray fans storming.
It was Washington State's first win over its rivals since 2008.
"We were supposed to win this game. It just came together and the way it came together, it was meant to be," Furney said.
The Cougars were the opposite of their trends for most of the season. They jumped ahead for the first time in nearly a month and led 10-7 at halftime, their first lead at the break since blowing a late lead to Colorado in September.
Then came a series of third-quarter mistakes by the Cougars that led to 21 points by the Huskies. Price hit Cody Bruns on a 15-yard touchdown and Sankey's two TD runs gave Washington what seemed an insurmountable lead.
The Cougars responded.
Carl Winston ran for three touchdowns for Washington State, matching the Cougars entire season total of touchdowns rushing entering Friday's game. His third TD with 7:26 left, combined with Tuel's 2-point conversion pass to Bartolone pulled the Cougars within 28-25.
Washington was forced to punt with 5:25 left after Price was forced to throw it away on third down. Tuel hit Gino Simone for 18 yards, his first catch of the game, to get into Washington territory and later a 9-yard reception to get inside the Huskies 30. The Cougars stalled after missing on third-and-1, but Furney connected on a 45-yard field goal to pull the Cougars even at 28-28 with 1:59 left.
The Huskies immediately marched deep into Washington State's end and faced a third-and-1 at the Cougars' 15 when they were flagged for the 18th time for a false start, tying the school record for most penalties in a game. Sankey was stopped short on third down and Washington coach Steve Sarkisian called timeout with 5 seconds left and sent Coons' to win it.
But the snap was low, the timing was off and Coons' kick never had a chance. With it went the Huskies shot at their first eight-win season since 2001.
"This will sting and this will hurt for probably more than a day quite honestly," Sarkisian said.
Tuel finished 33 of 53 for 350 yards and two interceptions. Price was 20 of 34 for 194 yards and two touchdowns, but also committed two costly turnovers. He had a fumble in the fourth quarter that led to Winston's third TD run.
The 18-point fourth-quarter rally was the largest overcome by a Washington State team since 1985.
"The mentality changed," Mayes said. "We were able to keep fighting, keep throwing punches and eventually they gave up and we didn't."

I don't really care about football all that much. The Apple Cup is about the only game I choose to watch. As I am not invested in either team, I am really glad the Cougars won this one if only to show that karma does exist. Bishop Sankey behaved like a first class jerk and didn't deserve a win in this game. He mowed down a photographer (sending him to the hospital by the way) and didn't even look twice at him, much less apologize, check to see if he was okay, or lend a hand getting up. Just turned around and walked away to the adoration of his teammates. Talk about poor sportsmanship. Poor Todd was knocked out cold. He didn't know what hit him and wasn't even sure why he woke up in the hospital.
@push papers He was shoved into the cameraman by a member of the opposing team.  It is obvious in the footage he had no control and was already going out when the defender shoved him.Â
@amptech @push papers I know. I saw that. I didn't say that he intentionally rammed into Todd. However, when he did, and sent Todd flying backwards, he didn't have the common courtesy to apologize, see if he was hurt (which he was), or offer to help him up if he hadn't been.  Most of us, if we accidently even bump into someone in passing will acknowledge it with a "Pardon me", or "Excuse me", or simple "Sorry".  Bishop was totally unconcerned. He turned and walked away, not once looking back. Totally self-obsessed. And if that is the depth of regard he has for his fellow man, I am glad he was denied a win. I hope that should he ever find himself in Todd's position, that the other person has more humanity and empathy than he does. Â
Marquess who?
Â
Good job Cougs. On to a better future.
From a Coug fan, let's look at the big picture here. Awesome win for the Cougs to scrap their way back in to this game. For the Dawgs, a very disappointing loss to a game that was put away in the 3rd qtr. The Dawgs are still going to a bowl game which does prove that the program is on the rise and better than they were before Sark got there. The Cougs had an awful season, on and off the field, but this emotional win propels them into an offseason where Leach can finally start brining in his style of players. I firmly believe that this is the start of something big in Pullman. What Leach did at Tech was no fluke and he has been away from the sidelines a couple years. Now that he has one year on the Palouse under his belt I see this program playing in December and eventually January.
Â
GO COUGS!!
So does the loss to the Cougs plus a win for Arizona State boot the Huskies out of a bowl bid? I would not be surprised if it did. After all when you look at the conference they are number 7 in the league with win and losses plus head to head meetings. If you don't believe me Huskie fans, take a look for yourself.. GO COUGS!
@egle You're automatically eligible for a bowl game after 6 wins... UW has 7. Let me do a little math for you.... 7 > 6.
Â
Answer your question?
@PackersCougsBravesSounders  @egle Eligible does not mean they will get a bowl game.  With wins vs OSU and Stanford I'm sure they will but the bowl committees choose who they want in their games.Â
Â
Rider, their is no question about a BCS game. Â Bowls such as the Holiday Bowl are not affiliated with the BCS.
@egle After losing to a last place team on an 8 game losing streak.. The Dawgs have no business in a BCS game.
Of all of the games to win this year, the Cougs chose the right game. Congratulations Cougs and Coach Leach!
Dear Coach Sarkisian,
You and the Dawgs are still not ready for Prime Time. Please make a note of it!

[and yes folks, I AM a Husky fan. We just tried to phone that game in and got our rectum handed to us for our trouble]
Â
And in further news, Pullman's Greek Row erupted in violence yet again as drunken fratboys paraded to the Rathaus to attempt to burn it down again. Idaho National Guard deploys to keep drunks on Washington side of border....
Huskies looked like they were playing "not to lose" instead of playing to WIN. What an embarrassing loss!
The cougs should go to a bowl game instead of the huskies.
@robdad Great win for the Cougs but I wouldn't go that far.
@robdad Uh, which season are you not paying attention to? The only game up-the-Wazzu has had any balls to actually play this year has been the Apple Cup.
I mean, good win and all but you gotta beat more than one team to go to a bowl game. And there's too damn many bowl games anyway. The only way a 6-6 team should go to a bowl game is the same way the rest of us do: by buying tickets to the game and flying Southwest Airlines.
18 penalty's for 129yds, game over. Why did Sark freeze his own kicker with a t.o.? Here comes the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.Â
@hinterland First of all stats show that freezing the kicker has no effect on the game.  Second, with 40 seconds on the clock teams virtually always let it run down until the play clock runs out then call a timeout before kicking.  Why give WSU 30 seconds to get a miracle play? Â
@hinterland And they shouldn't go to that no-name whatsoever bowl.
There ought to be ONE bowl game per TWO conferences. Win your Conference, go to a bowl. Maybe, just maybe the upcoming tournement system that's replacing the BCS will address this. I doubt it, but maybe...
I can't help but think how happy Kathi would have been.Â
Yep Kathi was there somewhere for that one, you know she was.   We were driving home from the game on Friday night and my mom brought it up out of the blue.   She loved the Cougs as much as any of us. Â
Â
Â
@iliketurtlez I was just thinking that, too...as much as I am a Dawg fan, I can't help but think Kathi's smiling somewhere for sure! :)
@iliketurtlez VERY good point. She's like happy as can be with her Coug flag flying :)
My hat goes off to the Coug MVP of the game ... Keith Price. He really came through for WSU in OT.
Thank ya Dawgs.
Keith Price has been shaky all season, but this was one of his better games. The penalties is what killed the Huskies. Whatever it's not like the Washington hasn't won an Apple Cup in overtime.
@nwsportstilidie And in reality, the Huskies get a bowl game regardless, I guess I just expected more from them.
Â
If you get one it will be the Vegas Bowl (unlikly) or the New Mexico Bowl. But with a win by ASU over Arizona you may not be going at all.
Steve Sarkisian is an absolute disgrace to the Husky program, it's time for him to go.
@Brewin4u HAHAHA okay.  They should bring back Willingham.  Sark didn't commit the pass interference plays in the end zone TWICE or throw the most ridiculous interception of the season in OT. Â

Way to go Cougs!!
As the November rains are sure and constant northwest sports teams choking skills are sure and constant..
I'm really happy for the Cougar program. They have had a very difficult season, and I am sure today's win will give the organization a great lift that bodes well for improving next year as well.
Â
I'm also delighted that it came at the expense of the UW program. Their success this season was built on beating unmotivated cupcake teams with maybe one exception. The program is going in the wrong direction and for the life of me I don't know where a #25 ranking and a bowl birth come from. They don't deserve either, and losing today's game is proof positive of that.
@wysoumible Ranking came from a difficult schedule and beating two top 10 teams. That being said, UW is still a mediocre team that has its good moments and its sad moments.
@Sanctuary They also got completely obliterated by two top ten teams - real top ten teams that are currently national championship contenders, not filler top ten teams that keep spots warm for when truly good teams that emerge as the season progresses. Not arguing here, obviously - the rankings are what they are. But to say that there are only 24 Division I teams in the country better than UW is absolutely absurd.
Look at all of the whining comments from the Dawg fans. I don't know if I can find a crying towel large enough for all of them to sob into!
@scooter sr. I won't be crying when we play in our bowl game.
@Sanctuary  @scooter sr. Bowl games are not all cut from the same bolt of cloth. The Rose Bowl carries a certain prestige that the Vagisil Bowl can't quite match.
@Sanctuary @scooter sr.  Are you so sure?
Leach just redeemed himself in a huge fashion!!!
Even with the terrible reffing (a head bob is a false start???) we still had plenty of chances and screwed it up. An embarrassing loss by the Dawgs.
@Sanctuary U.W. didn't really screw it up, they just got out played... and complaining about the reffing is a poor excuse. Â
@Sanctuary Yes, it is a false start. 2009-2010 Rules and Interpretations Rule 7-1 (4)(b), a shift or movement that simulates the beginning of a play. It is regularly enforced in the NCAA and the NFL.
@wysoumible  @Sanctuary Bullsloney, that is rarely, if ever enforced in any league. If it was a penalty, then why did they wait until the cougs crossed the neutral zone to throw the flagl??
@Sanctuary  @wysoumible Like it or not, NCAA Division I football officials are not required to live up to your standard of instantaneous perfection. And it does get called; the fact that you're not paying attention doesn't change that.
Somewhere Kathi Goertzen is smiling.
 @Watery Tart My thought exactly.
Sark needs to BENCH price. He showed no football sense at all trying to throw the football when all he had to do was protect ball and try on next down, No he had to try to be a hero and threw it right to a cougar. NO LEADERSHIP. Sark Needs to bench him for bowl game and make him earn QB spot back for Next year, if he hangs around.
Sark needs to bench himself!!!
A disgrace for the Huskies, Â They finally put together a perfect game, botching it in all three phases: giving up 31 points on defense to a 2-9 team, offense a no-show in the first half again and a missed field goal right down the middle in reasonable distance. Â I know the O line is not what was expected, but Price makes some really bad decisions. Â Don't even get me started about the penalties. Â The Cougs totally deserved to win this game, they played harder, showed more discipline and kept their heads in the game after the third quarter when it looked like another loss. Â Quite a poorly prepared team by Sarkasian. Â Just sayin' for all the money he makes.
The best team won the Apple Cup 2012
@sammie and what team is going to a bowl game?
@robberdoos  @sammie I would rather win an Apple Cup any day over going to a pathetic bowl game.Â
@robberdoos  They may be gioing. too bad they won't win.
