Ken Griffey Jr. to be inducted into Mariners Hall of Fame
SEATTLE -- Ken Griffey Jr., one of the greatest players Seattle Mariners' history, if not all of baseball, will become the 7th member of the team's Hall of Fame, the Mariners announced Tuesday.
Griffey will be inducted during a pre-game ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2013 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Griffey was selected first overall in the June 1987 draft by the Mariners and less than two years later, at age 19, he was in center field on Opening Night in 1989. He proceeded to electrify the game of baseball in the 1990’s, not just across the Northwest, but across the country.
A 13-time All-Star and the 1997 Most Valuable Player, Griffey played in Seattle from 1989 through 1999, then again from 2009-2010. He leads the team in career home runs (417 as a Seattle Mariner, 630 overall) which included two seasons with a team-record of 56 home runs. He is among the team career leaders in several other offensive categories.
But many also remember Griffey for his spectacular catches while roaming the Kingdome's center field that netted him 10 Gold Glove awards.
Griffey will join Alvin Davis, Dave Niehaus, Jay Buhner, Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson and Dan Wilson in the Mariners Hall of Fame. Griffey will be eligible for election to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in January of 2016.
Griffey has spent the past two seasons as a special consultant to the franchise.
