Kentwood's McGuire aims for title, prepares for draft

Kentwood's McGuire aims for title, prepares for draft
KENT, Wash. -- Kentwood catcher Reese McGuire doesn't know life without baseball, and he might never have to.

"As a kid, this was my favorite sport," McGuire said. "I was playing basketball and football, but I just always had that extra love and passion for this game."

That passion has turned McGuire into one of the best high school baseball players in the country.

"When I'm back behind the dish, I feel like I'm at home in a sense," he said. "I just think I have good leadership back there."

Kentwood's Mark Zender has coached baseball for 30 years, and he says McGuire is the most talented player he's ever had.

"It's like watching artistry when you watch him play," Zender said. "It's his explosiveness. He's a fast twitch kid. He can run fast and hit for power. His defensive ability is second to none. He's probably major league ready defensively right now."

Those are just a few reasons big league teams are drooling over McGuire with the draft less than a month away. All of the experts think McGuire will be a first round pick.

"This next month is going to be pretty sweet," said McGuire. "As a kid, I was like, 'Man, I want to be a professional baseball player and be on the big league team,' but I never really thought it could come after high school."

That's why McGuire committed to the University of San Diego. But now he'll have to make a decision: college or professional baseball.

"As of right now, I have an awesome school lined up and that was the path, and if something special happens during the draft, which I hope so, then it's going to be my decision with my family and my adviser and we're just going to do what's best," McGuire said.

McGuire calls it a win-win situation because no matter what he chooses the destination is the same: his home on the baseball diamond. And that's the only place he wants to be.
