M's demote Smoak to AAA Tacoma, recall Robinson

SEATTLE -- Just hours after the team shook up their lineup by trading star Ichiro Suzuki to the New York Yankees, the Seattle Mariners made another move in an effort to bolster the offense.
The team sent slumping first baseman Justin Smoak to Triple-A Tacoma and will bring up outfielder-designated hitter Mike Carp. Smoak, acquired two years ago as the centerpiece in a trade deadline deal with Texas for pitcher Cliff Lee, was hitting .189.
"This is for him," manager Eric Wedge said. "This is what we feel is the right thing to do for him right now to give him a break, get him in a different environment without the pressure of being in the big leagues."
Smoak went hitless in three at-bats and was riding an 0-for-19 streak.
"I think everybody has seen what's going on. It's one of those things, go down there, get work in and get back to where I was a couple months ago," he said.
The Mariners also activated 1B/DH Mike Carp from the disabled list and called up OF Trayvon Robinson from Tacoma.

With A-Rod down, I wonder if we're in talks with Yankees again....Figgins for two more minor leaguers.
Get back to where he was a couple of months ago? And that was .190?? Smoak is as bright as a box of rocks.
The Mariners are playing like a AA team right now, if that.Â
They brought up Carp for Smoak? Seriously? What a joke
Ackley and Figgins and Ryan need to be next. We've waited all season and they've done diddly / squat.
maybe if he used a little less chewing tobacco, he might be able to see the ball?!
The whole lineup is slumping. Send them all down. Send the hitting coach down to.
Lets play Chone Figgins full time again, just for laughs.Â
He shouldn't be the only one going down to Tacoma
Mike Carp .157 Chone Figgins .181 Brendan Ryan .186 !!!! Do something "for them" !!!!
@ducati Wait, aren't these the guys the Mariners are 'rebuilding' around? And we just traded Ichiro (.263) away?
@theToucan @ducati Remember -- Ichiro was the one who asked to be traded. The shocker was, the front office actually  granted his wish. Those pitchers better be worth it.
Can't wait for Jackie Z, Lincoln and Armstrong to go.... that would be the ultimate triple play.

@theToucan Ichiro was a very good player, but his physical tools have eroded beyond the point of rebuilding around. He was just a bobblehead model for the M's.
@theToucan Yep they are part of the core they are rebuilding around.
@Major_Payne They aren't rebuilding around those guys. Smoak, Ackley, Saunders, Montero and Seager. Those are the young guys they're trying to build around.
