Owens agrees to terms with Seahawks after tryout

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Terrell Owens is coming back to the NFL, hoping the Seattle Seahawks' search for another veteran wide receiver will get him off the sidelines.
The 38-year-old Owens had a tryout with the Seahawks on Monday morning, and hours later the team announced it had agreed to terms with the former star receiver. He hasn't played in the NFL since the 2010 season with Cincinnati, when he caught 72 passes for 983 yards and nine touchdowns.
Foxsports.com first reported the agreement between Owens and the Seahawks. Terms of Owens' contract weren't available.
Owens sat out the entire 2011 season following surgery on his left knee and failed to receive any offers. He then had surgery on his left knee and didn't receive any offers to play last season.
Owens initially made his return this spring playing for the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League. He had 35 catches for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns while playing eight of 11 games, but was released and lost an ownership stake in the team in May.
Owens, a third-round draft choice by San Francisco in 1996, has started 201 of the 219 regular-season NFL games he has played in his career. He has 1,078 receptions for 15,934 yards and 153 touchdowns — the second most in league history.
His nine seasons with at least 1,000 yards receiving and 13 years with at least 50 catches rank third. His total receptions are sixth on the NFL career list. Owens spent eight seasons with San Francisco, two with Philadelphia, and three with Dallas before a pair of one-year stints with Buffalo and Cincinnati.
Owens is the latest veteran receiver the Seahawks have signed since training camp began. It started when the Seahawks brought in Antonio Bryant, but he was cut late last week. Seattle also signed Braylon Edwards, who played sparingly in 2011 with San Francisco during an injury-filled season. Now it's Owens getting his chance.
Seattle is seeking both insurance and a complement for Sidney Rice. Last season, Rice played in just nine games as he was sidelined by shoulder injuries and concussions. Rice had surgery on both shoulders in the offseason and is being held out of contact drills during training camp as the Seahawks try to get him to the start of the regular season healthy.
Additionally, the Seahawks cut No. 2 receiver Mike Williams in July, and Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin and Ben Obomanu, the Seahawks' main options for filling that role, don't fit head coach Pete Carroll's desire to have another tall receiver with a big frame.
Owens could be on the practice field Tuesday morning when the Seahawks return from their off day.

They're kidding, right? Why does this city's sports teams always seem to choose the losers, the bad boys and the has beens? come on Seattle...we want to be winners someday...
Why do so many "sports fans" on here know nothing about the sport they are commenting on?
Â
@GeorgeG. Calling for Pete Carroll to be fired? You're insane. He has improved the team every single year. No core to build off of? We only have a top 5 defense and are now working on our offense. We have some key pieces on offense and we are not that far away on that side of the ball. If Flynn turns out to be the QB we are hoping he'll be we are going to be that much closer to winning the West and getting back to being a perennial playoff team. We have a strong brand, team and community supporting the team. Have you ever gone to a game? Been there tail gating?
Â
To all the people calling him a cancer, you are just regurgitating the crap you hear on ESPN's biased reports. Every team he's played for has been a better team with him on it. He's well liked by fans and media members. He might be a distraction from time to time but his play makes up for it. Also, he's 38 now, not the young punk he was with the 49'ers and Eagles.
@the Not that I am an all knowing football guru, but I'm with you on the quality of "sports fans" around here. I was constantly mocked for not having faith in Clipboard Jesus on these boards. Even at the games, the people around me thought I was insane because I didn't see him as being a legitimate QB. Wonder where all those QB experts are now?
Â
My biggest concern with T.O. is his recent stint in the arena league, when he decided to just give up and ended up losing a stake in the ownership of the team. That is not a trait of someone that has learned their lesson and is mature.
Funny that there are about twice as many trolls on this site now that Komo did their fabulous overhaul.
Time to fire Pete Carroll. He's spent way too much money for a transitory team. There is no core to build off of. There are ton of 1 year contract players, no franchise quarterback, and no sense of team or oneness. We need to hire a coach from Indianapolis where they pick quality players and people for the long term. They built a strong brand, a strong team, and a strong community to support the team. Pete only offers gimmicks.
@GeorgeG. They hit gold with one guy, Peyton Manning.  20 years before that they were garbage, not even a .500 team.
@GeorgeG. , who would you have as our franchise QB? The drafts haven't been that deep with guaranteed franchise QBs, and even if they had, do the names Rick Mirer or Ryan Leaf mean anything to you? There is a strong defensive core (3 DBs in the Pro Bowl last year mean anything to you?) and our running game has picked up as the incredibly young offensive line has come together while battling through injuries. You need one year contracts to help support the team as you completely rebuild if you want to remain any type of competitive. That said, I still don't like this particular signing, but I'm not about to give up on PC yet.
@GeorgeG. Another brilliant man on this threat, I hope you can sense my sarcasm. Give Matt Flynn a chance and he will become our franchise QB. And do you know what Indys record was last season? THEY WERE THE WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE!! and its not hard to make a good pick when you have the first pick in the draft. Time to fire you. In the words of Donald Trump (my finger is pointed at you right now) GeorgeG Your fired!!
Pete has proven that he'll cut your ass if you don't do your part. Look at Mike Williams for example. I don't like TO one bit but I don't think this is a bad move.
Â
GO HAWKS!
@Hachee_Bungwhy One of the only smart people to post on here all day, get ready for all these fickle fans to start bashing you now though but i like your attitude and your logo, Bring back the Sonics too.
@Chitownhawksfan People don't seem to realize that we are very weak at WR. Sidney Rice is our only real proven threat and that's only if he can stay healthy which history says he can't. Doug Baldwin looked like a nice pick up last year but we'll have to see if it was legit.
See what he is all about now...spent the last year playing arena ball. Sounds like he has his wheels still after the knee injury. Now gotta see what state his HEAD is in...that has always been his problem...
You guys better hope you got him dirt cheap.Â
This is a disaster. The second he puts on a Seahawks uniform he disgraces it. We don't need him here and his "We would have won if I got the ball more" attitude.
Let's hope he checks attitude at the door for a change.
That kind of crap doesn't fly around here.
@mstipton Good luck with that. The only thing in our solar system bigger than TO's ego is Jupiter.
No arguement from me.
Owens is bad for any team that he comes in contact with. That's why he's moved around so much.
@Magic 8 Ball Really? He helped the eagles make the superbowl. he took the 49ers and cowboys to the playoffs multiple times. Ya thats really "bad" for teams. Yes, he has an ego, no denying that. But hes also one of the greatest WR to put on an uniform.
Alot of people may not like T.O because he's got a big ego, but what wide receiver doesn't? Since the Hawks are struggling and Pete Carroll is handing out 1 year contracts, why not take him in and let him prove himself? I'm not necessarily a fan of the guy myself, but when he has been healthy in the past he has done well. The least that he will do is HOPEFULLY teach the current Hawk WR's some lessons from what he's learned in his NFL carreer.
I do hope you right. But he is not know as a mentor at all. I saw him play the Raptures here in Comcast they stuffed him HARD and he was trying. This 1 yr junk is not working so far I do not want to wait 10 years more for a good team like they think they can in baseball here. (attendance will continue to decline) I'm sippin Pete's coolaid for now. Would love to drink. SHOW me.
@BocaBob Attendance will continue to decline? They sold out EVERY game last season. And watch, this years team will make the playoffs, Flynn is a huge improvement over Tjack and  is the first QB that they have had that can really air it out and TO will thrive with Flynn. The whole point I have been trying to make on this thread is all you bandwagon fans who are ripping this Owens signing now will be saying he is the greatest ever come week 4 and if by some chance he does become a problem they cut him, there is no risk in this deal and huge reward. We are getting one of the biggest play receivers in the history of the game for the price of a punter.
@Chitownhawksfan correction: he had 9 Touchdowns with the bengals
I do hope you are right and will cheer for him.
It's kinda nice just talking football again though!
@BocaBob  @Chitownhawksfan They do equal wins though, In Phily they were title contenders every year with Owens and the only reason people were afraid of the niners was because the threat of Owens, Even when he was on the god awful Bengals he had 10 tds. I think he is more determined now than ever to prove everyone wrong. Talk to me in 6 months and call me a idiot if i am wrong but Owens is going to be a absolute beast with the Seahawks.  One of the top 10 WRs in the league.
@Chitownhawksfan (attendance will continue to decline) is for the baseball team. I do hope you are right. But it is a big chance still in just distraction alone. I want to be wrong I just think he is a cancer evrywhere he has been you point to his numbers they don't = wins.
I thought Pete was smarter than this.I was wrong. This will turn out like Milton Bradley.Duh...........I wont be watching now...................
@grog That makes no sense, Milton Bradley is a wife beater and was signed to a guaranteed long term contract, TO is a league veteran minimum, and NFL contracts expire at will. TO is required to perform, or adios. Please see Williams, Bryant.
He is smarter, hence part of the reasoning behind the 1 year contract.
While I suppose TO wouldn't be my first choice, there are some positives here: His 2010 numbers were better than any Hawks receiver last year. He's hungry to be back in the NFL and down on cash, so my guess is he'll keep his yap in control. He was a top receiver for over a decade, so perhaps he can share some knowledge (ok, might be pushing it there). We brought in Joe Jurevicus past his twilight the end of his career and he hauled in 10 TDs. That's what we need....a guy who can bring it down in the end zone.Â
Â
I'll give TO a chance, but the leash is short.Â
bacon-pants. LOL. you need an avatar.
O.K. we shall have  a wait  see attitude.
Go Hawks.
@bacon_pants I agree.  He has outperformed any receiver we have, the only season that comes close is Rice in 2009 when he played in Minnesota and had 1300 yards and 8 TD's.  TO's last season in Dallas he had 1000 yards and 10 TD's, 8 TD's when he was in Buffalo.  He's also more durable, or has been in the past.  He's a big target in the red zone, I like this signing.
If the man gets us 500+ yards and 5-10 touchdowns, I'm all for it. Just because we signed him doesn't mean he is automatically on the roster come game 1 in Arizona, folks.
Â
I've never been a T.O. fan but there is no denying his statistics, and if he just ran a 4.5 40-yard, then he's faster than half our current receiving corps... at age 38 no less. His egotistical days were with the 49ers, Eagles, and Cowboys. During his recent stint with the Bengals, he didn't seem like the T.O. of old (or much less the diva-like self the media portrayed him to be).
Â
I root for everyone in Seahawks uniforms, no matter their plight. Go Hawks!
@Speedofacobra He was well behaved for the most part in Buffalo too. I listen to KJR every AM and today Mitch talked with the last four cities TO has been in. They all had good things to say about him. People just like to regurgitate the crap they hear on ESPN (biased media) rather than actually learn something. Philly and Dallas both commented on his ego but his play quality made it worth it.
@Speedofacobra you actually have logic and sound like a real fan. These are the same guys who were bashing coach Carroll for bringing Marshawn  here too.
Speechless. Hawks are the laughing stock right now. No question the guy has talent. However, is it worth his clown antics and clubhouse cancer? No one in the NFL would touch this guy. Why you ask? His history speaks for itself. I'm not talking off the field drama... I'm talking on the field. He has alienated every one of his past teams and beyond. Not worth the 1mil salary at all. If anything... it will be entertaining. Bad move.
And if he gets the hawks further than they were last year, who will be the laughing stock then?
@BVU07mazdaguy That's a big if. If history shows... it doesn't look good. Same logic was applied to Milton Bradley. I am very well aware of the contractual differences. It doesn't change the fact that TO and his baggage has now arrived.
NO faith and NO real Seahawks fans on this thread! They signed him to a 1$ mil contract with the minimum guaranteed. When healthy T O is one of the best to ever play WR, there is no risk here and huge upside. People said the same thing when Carroll traded for Lynch. I remember reading on komo that Carroll went out and signed a thug who will never play a snap for the Hawks and now he is a elite back. Pete knows what he is doing and this was a great move. If he does not produce or if his attitude becomes a issue they release him and do not have to pay him. Simple as that. As a real Seahawks fan and someone who actually knows about football not just some bandwagon hopper like all of you I believe Owens will be a candidate for Comback Player Of The Year and in case you have not noticed, We are not very deep at the WR position. Sydney will be hurt in the pre season as usual. If Carroll has ever made a mistake signing a WR is was going out and paying Rice $42 million to warm up the bench. Have some faith people.Â
TO for comeback player of the year on the Hawks. How'd that work out for you?
@Chitownhawksfan I agree with you, but you need to get a couple facts straight. First of he was signed for $900,00. NONE of which is guaranteed. If he does get released, the hawks still take a cap hit of $600,00. Which isnt much but still.
Â
It is not the talent potential it is the man. Owens makes the it more about him rather than the team or even the game. If you don't like my opinion or anyone else's here then don't read them.Â
Â
Â
Who's got no faith "Sydney will be hurt in the pre season as usual".
@djb6919 I do have faith but saying Sydney will be hurt as usual is a fact, You know it and i know it and Pete knows it, that is one of the main reasons why he went out and got TO, we need a big time threat WR when Sydney goes down. I would love to see him stay healthy but that will not happen. Sydney Rice is fragile. Come talk to me in a month when He is sitting on the IR and tell me who was right. That does not mean i do not have faith in my team I just actually know what I am talking about.
The NFL has turned into a freak show with the NCAA-Div 1 football not too far behind so what's the big deal?Â
 @Wormwood Than don"t watch.
Â
I'm like the rest of you here. Such a young team and you bring this a- hole? He is not a veteran leader he is a old prima-donna and not mentally stable lately. Can we get Mike back already? Pete is killing me!

@Chitownhawksfan  @BocaBob Are your feelings hurt, T.O.?  I'm pretty sure that's you behind that screen name.  Plenty of us have been watching the game for a long time.  I'm glad you think this is a great move but I, for one, realize what this jerk has done to every other organization he's been in.  And self centered jerks like this aren't going to wise up anytime soon.  Complete waste of time and money.
@Chitownhawksfan  @BocaBob @ Chitownhawksfan... No reason to start the name calling. It only makes you look like the turkey pal. Everyone has a right to their own opinion. Including you. Carry on.....
@d_2 Your right i dont get it, and i think its a good idea for you to be done.
@Chitownhawksfan Yawn.... you don't get it. Done here.
@d_2 Apology accepted this time, just be careful next time you try to call me out. I am too smart for that!
@Chitownhawksfan Oh... apologies. When you say to someone - You are about as smart as a turkey is a compliment. Got it!
@d_2 Read it again, I did not call anyone any names, I said as smart as a turkey. And your right everyone has there own opinion, mine is that Most of the people who live in the Seattle area are just bandwagon sports fans, they claim to be huge fans when the team is in first place and sit and rip management and talk about how foolish they are when they are not. The same people who are on here ripping TO will be out buying his jersey once he starts catching TDs. Thats what TO does, he catches TDs.Â
