Report: NFL fines Seahawks' Tate for flattening block

IRVING, Texas (AP) - Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee is ready to move on from the flattening block he took from Seattle receiver Golden Tate, who has apparently been fined by the NFL.
Citing a person close to the receiver, NFL.com says Tate has been fined for block. The story goes on to say the NFL does not announce fines until Friday, and a fine amount was not yet available. However, the minimum amount for a blind-side block for a first-time offense would be $21,000.
Lee said Wednesday that doesn't blame Tate for blocking him and that it was just part of football. The linebacker says the only issue he had "a little bit" was how Tate celebrated, but acknowledged that's part of football, too.
Lee still has a mark on his lower left chin from the play in Sunday's 27-7 loss at Seattle.

Blind side? I guess that works if ya have no vision in yer right eye.
That or a complete lack of periferal vision.
Â
Maybe Tate should taken the charging foul instead and let Lee over run him.
Â
OMG... I just had an epiphany. Footsketball! Just think of the possibilities!
The hit was legit ! ! NFL has gone sissy ! ! Tate should vigorously appeal this garbage !

That sentence appears twice in the article.Â

NFL sponsored by HGTV? Â That ... was .. a...clean... HARD FRONT SIDE hit! Are you kidding me? Put me in a dress and call me Suzie. Â
Â
Anyone for a game of two handed touch?
Golden you were right on!!! The fan's should kick in for you fine.... The No Funball League has struck again....
Â
Wimp league. That's what this is turning into. Nike better start designing tutu's for the uniforms. These hits are what make those pricy tickets worth paying for!!! And the ruling is bogus. The guy would have tackled Tate's QB, and he's not supposed to block him? The block was right in his chest so it wasn't a "defenseless" player. And he obviously went low to try to avoid helmet to helmet contact. This kind of dumb ruling will increase dangerous hits because players will figure out they'll get fined anyway, even when they are trying to be safe.Â
the whole thing is simply garbage. First the league started fining guys for illegal hits (that generated a flag). Now they regularly fine guys for regular football plays that generate (and should not) any flags.
Â
Great hit Golden! That is a football block..called a de-cleater...or a slobber-knocker.....
Â
Â
Good clean hit. Note to fair-weather fans: football is a violent sport. If Lee was a WR and had the ball, this would be a non-issue. Jerry Jones needs to shut his pie-hole too. When Tyron Smith horse-collared a player, Jones all but condoned it. That was beyond flagrant. Time to take of the pads Gents... now grab a flag. No Fun League. Anyone remember the Steve Largent vs Mike Harden hit? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-KO-XW8M2A Classic Smashmouth football. If you don't like it... turn the channel to lawn bowling. Sheesh!
Tate:Â Let's see my change purse is around here somewhere.
@mstipton Pay the fine in doughnuts!
There are a lot of issues with violence in sports, especially in football. There always will be too. No ref or sanction, even ending a guy's career will stop it. WHY? WE put out the call for uncompromising men to play football for their entire lifetime for a mere chance to become a multimillionaire football god. Tate ain't playin around on that, and neither was that linebacker.Â
That linebacker had ONE job. Get that quarterback, and crush him with a blindside hit if at all possible. The little receiver too had ONE job when he saw his qb in trouble, return to the ball, crush the linebacker with a blindside hit if at all possible. That's billion dollar football kids. Tate, hit im again! He ain't dead yet.
I watched Tate's hit on that player and Tate should have been banned for at least 3 games as well as fined. That was a cold blooded blindside hit that should have never been used on anyone by any team. That was not a block but an illegal head hit and it was a cheap shot on another team at best. I know there are a bunch of blood hungry fools out there who would approve a hit like that, but it is and was a cheap shot and a try to do injury to another player. Was he trying to take him out of the game? Football used to be a game, but now its only a bunch of testosterone junkies running around trying to bust up other players. That is not a sport unless you consider tossing Christians to the Lions one.
you are a complete moron... maybe you should take up chess as your favorite sport. that was an incredible hit with an definate purpose.  the only reason fines are being given on these hits is because of the NFL desire to stay away from lawsuits. the boys play football as their choice. they understand it is VIOLENT and they take the risk... funny how Sean Lee says it was an okay hit (except the celebration) but you find it to be so unfair....waaaaa boooohooooo
@Rubydoo Gee, what a profound statement. And so eloquent. You must have been very attentive in the schools for Neanderthals. I suppose that is where you picked up your education on how to use clubs and spears. If this is not to profound for your little mind you might read about contact sports. They DO NOT have to be violent. Skills of strength and intelligence is far more successful than brute force and fu*king ignorance.
@LongBeachBum If it was the other way Lee blocking Tate the some. No fine would have been leveled to Lee.
@LongBeachBum Only reason Tate got a fine is due to little boy Jerry Jones whining to his buddy the Commish
@LongBeachBum I didn't see it that way. Tate looked shorter than this guy who was standing fully upright and hit the guy hard with his shoulder first. LB's should never be standing that upright.
@LongBeachBum . You must like tennis.
@LongBeachBum A head on collision is not a blind sided hit. Lee had tunnel vision in pursuit of Wilson. Tate led with his shoulders, but the impact looked worse because of the collision (watch it in slow motion, Lee's chin hit the crest of Tate's helmet, not the other way around). Lee took a hard hit because he was chasing a ball carrier and forgetting that he was still on a football field.
And Lee was in no way a "defenseless" player.
@LongBeachBum BUM that was not a cold blooded blindside hit as you call it. That was a fantastic block on a defender who was chasing after our quarterback. What was he suppose to yell at the guy and say "woohoo Mr. Defender I am about to block you so be ready" Or was he suppose to sidestep and let our guy get hit? The only fine that should be given out is to Sean Lee for not having his head on a swivel and being aware of his surroundings. What next skirts on the quarterbacks? This is football you are gonna get the snot knocked out of you at times and you need to be in shape and prepared. Also that block hit that defender in the chest but the top of Tate's helmet connected with Sean Lee's chin because he de-cleated him. Read the Dallas paper over 50% of their fans thought it was a legal good hit. (according to their comment section on Monday morning. I bet Russell Wilson pays his fine for him too.
@lakeunion  @LongBeachBum Jamming a helmet into a guys chest and under his chin is not a hit, it is a deliberate attempt to disable a player from the game. Lucky, not, deliberate is what it was. Head butting and head hits should be outlawed. They are damaging players permanently. Football used to be a sport, now its just a blood sport. Might as well bring back the gladiators and lions. Â
@LongBeachBum A little much, but yes. That 'block' was unecessary.
That was a great block!! The team should reimburse him to cover what ever the greedy NFL finds him! You want to encourage good blocking not fine it!! I miss NFL when it was more about football and a little less about money.
The No Fun League is at it again! I'm about sick to death of Roger Goddell and all his "rule changes" Like others have said, get out the flags and play flag football! Goddell is wrecking this league one week at a time!Â
Hey, it was only a measly fine. No suspension. Personally, I saw that Tate was aiming for the pads but part of his helmet did it the linebacker on the chin. It was not intentional, but it did happen. Meh. Keep it going, Golden!
Easy call for the league, not because of where contact was made, but because Lee was considered a defenseless player. Read the rule book. And if the hit had been made ON Tate instead of BY him, you would all be screaming bloody murder.
Â
@MVDad You should read the rule book. Lee wasn't defenseless. He was attempting to make a tackle and didn't see Tate. Just cause he didn't see him doesn't make him "defenseless."
Exactly
"Holy Horse Crap Batman!!" At the rate the N.F.L. is pussifying football, I might have to start watching Rugby. It was a clean hit. Played over and over and over, and the footage didn't change. Yea, the helmet slid up a bit, but the HIT was in the pads. LEGAL in football last time I checked.
@LoudNoises Maybe they should just start wearing pink year around.
@LoudNoises Did you see the photo of moment of impact from the Forthworth paper? THis is a link to the gallery...it is #27.

Â
@LoudNoises p.s.-The expression on Cowboys Sean Lee is "I'm going nighty night now"
That's crazy. Yes it was a hard hit. But by no means was it an illegal hit! The NFL is taking football out of football.Â
Cowboys and donuts.....
Nothing is safe.
@DualLeads I can't stop laughing >.<
Clean hit.
Â
Do it again Tate, and make up an account for donations.
Â
'Lee said Wednesday that doesn't blame Tate for blocking him and that it was just part of football. The linebacker says the only issue he had "a little bit" was how Tate celebrated, but acknowledged that's part of football, too'.
Â
What's next? I got my feewings hute because he was happy?
Â
Really? The NFL?
Â
Flag football anyone?
@bobalouie  Come on. Most NFL players don't mind the hitting. They do mind what they perceive as showboating. The linebacker was cool with the whole thing. Give him a break.
