Rice TD gives Seahawks 23-17 OT win over Bears

CHICAGO (AP) - Perfect at home, the Seattle Seahawks managed a win on the road for a change.
They needed overtime to do it, and the extra time spent might help them make the playoffs.
Russell Wilson connected with Sidney Rice for a 13-yard touchdown with 7:33 left in overtime to lift the Seahawks to a wild 23-17 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
Unbeaten in five home games, the Seahawks finally figured a way to win on the road after dropping five of their first six, and knocked off the NFC North leaders in the process.
Seattle (7-5) leads the NFC wild-card chase and, despite its frequent struggles on the road has won three in a row in the regular season at Soldier Field
This one sure was dramatic.
Seattle took a short-lived lead late in regulation on rookie Wilson's 14-yard pass to Golden Tate, only to watch the Bears' Robbie Gould boot a 46-yard field goal as time expired to send it into OT.
The Seahawks (7-5) started with the ball on their 20, and it ended with one final flourish.
Rice hauled in a pass from Wilson and took a shoulder-to-helmet hit from Major Wright that appeared to knock him out as he lunged into the end zone. He stayed down for several minutes but eventually walked off the field.
That gave the Seahawks their only road win other than a victory at Carolina.
They pulled it out even though Marshawn Lynch was held in check with 87 yards rushing. He had a touchdown in the second quarter, but also fumbled on the game's opening possession, leading to a score for Chicago.
Wilson threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns and was particularly cool down the stretch, sending Chicago (8-4) to its third loss in four games. Making matters worse for the Bears, the injuries mounted.
Linebacker Brian Urlacher (hamstring) and cornerback Tim Jennings (shoulder) were hurt on the winning drive. Receiver Earl Bennett (concussion) and safety Chris Conte (illness) left earlier in the game. The Bears had already ruled out return specialist Devin Hester (concussion) and guard Chris Spencer (knee) after they were injured against Minnesota. Throw in the torn ACL guard Lance Louis suffered against the Vikings, and the Bears were a short-handed bunch.
Even so, they had their chances.
Jay Cutler threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Marshall added 165 yards receiving, but the Bears came up short late in the game and in OT.
They were leading 14-10 when Adam Podlesh pinned Seattle on the 3 with 3:40 remaining. Wilson orchestrated a dramatic drive, capping it with a 14-yard pass to Tate that gave the Seahawks a 17-14 lead with 24 seconds left in regulation.
The Bears weren't finished, though.
Cutler hit a leaping Marshall with the Seahawks' Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas on him for a 56-yarder that put the ball on the Seattle 30. Gould then nailed a 46-yard field goal to send the game into overtime.

I find it ironic that Mike Holmgren demanded to be GM as well as coach even though he did not, and does not, have any GM skills, while Pete Carroll, perfectly content to be the coach - and a consummate players' coach at that, has demonstrated himself as an expert on identifying high-potential NFL talent.
My boy Schneids deserves a lot of props, too. He the one that wanted to Russell.
@wysoumible John Schneider gets no credit?
Typical Seahawks fan, "OMG the refs screwed us. Â Once again we had to play the men in stripes. Â The NFL is out to get us. Â Just look at the schedule bias."
@jb_22 I guess everyone celebrates a victory in their own way...
If only the guy knocked down was named Stir Fry. Â They'd go so well together!
It was great to finally win a meaningful road game. It's important to point out that the lost road games this year have for the most part been by the slightest margins. They have been in every game. If they can add to this momentum, the Seahawks may legitimately contend this year. There doesn't seem to be anything that rattles Wilson's nerves, which will pay dividends as he hopefully continues shaping into the franchise QB. Hopefully his weekly improvements continue. I never thought that the failures of this season would ride on the defense. They have evolved from a dominating unit to one that is mediocre. I hope they can hit their stride again. If they do, look out. If not, they are going to have a difficult time making or doing anything meaningful in the playoffs.
LOL @ the photo caption. Didn't know getting knocked out was a new TD celebration.
I am very pleased that the Seahawks were able to beat the Chicago Bears and the game in overtime. It seemed that the Seahawks were playing against 12 opponents The Bears and the refs) all of the first half and a part of the second. At one point, I found myself asking why did the NFL bring back the regular referees, they were just as bad as their early season replacements. I though for sure the Seahawks were going to get homered and lose the game.
The caption on that photo is a wee bit off. Sidney Rice was doing no celebrating after that nasty hit.Â
Let's hope this is the worst the refs treat the Hawks for the rest of the season. Â Overturned touchdown, mysterious fumble by Lynch, missed fumble by the Bear kickoff returned, Seahawk pulled down by the face mask and, then, called for a chop block, etc. Â It was really awful. Â Great game by Wilson and I'm glad the refs didn't overturn Rice's touchdown in the overtime.
So I guess we found our QBOTF. Â Poor Matt Flynn. Â He deserves a starting gig. Â With all of the failures at QB he may be in big demand this off season. Â Arizona has nobody at QB. Â Oakland hates Carson Palmer. Â Locker is failing in Tennessee. Â Gabbert is terrible. Â Sanchez is done. Â There are about 12 teams in need of 15 QB's and only 2 or 3 good ones available in the draft. Â Do we trade Flynn? Â Who to? Â What could we get? Â Is the third string guy ready to step up? Â I would like to see us parlay Flynn for a couple good picks and some salary cap space. Â I think it will happen. Â Wilson is going to be here a while. Â
A tough game. They played good for the most part. That was a heck of play at the end and a tough hit. Helmet to helmet. Hope Rice is okay.Â
We were robbed of a touchdown just prior to the end of the half, on a bad call by the replay ref. So, unfortunately, it DID come down to those 4 points, and we had to play OT.
@newspuppy Really?  So I guess the ball can bounce off the ground as long as it touches the WRs hands first, haha.  Even FOX's expert ref called it a no catch.  But I guess you have more training than him.  Try looking at things with an objective eye for a change.
@jb_22 @newspuppy Wow JB you must have incredible eyes to see that ball hit the ground because watching in slow motion on a hi def 60" LED I sure as hell couldn't see enough to overturn the ruleling on the field. Great win for the hawks, sorry your team lost jb.
@jb_22 The fact that we are saying "maybe it should have, maybe not" suggests that the standard was not met to overturn the play. I think it was an error by Mike Carey not to uphold the play considering that 1) the ruling on the field was a TD and 2) there not appear to be enough evidence to overturn the play.
Â
Ultimately, it doesn't matter...I'm just an observer and he is the referee...but I think we are within our right to question the call.
@Necrobio No, that's not what I'm suggesting.  Are suggesting that the announcers are infallible?  Obviously you are not. Â
Â
Maybe it should have, maybe not.  I know one thing Mike Carey didn't have the luxury of consulting the media, Seahawks fans, and Bears fans to determine if there was "incontrovertible visual evidence."  Clearly he felt that way along with Mike Pereira, myself, and pretty much everyone else that is not a Seahawks fan. Â
@jb_22 Are you suggesting that "professional referees" are infallible? I think there are multiple instances where not only are the officials wrong, but it is obvious that they're wrong. See: Super Bowl XL, "Bottlegate" Browns-Jags game, the "Tuck Rule" game, etc.
Â
You need "incontrovertible visual evidence" to overturn the TD call on the field. From all the replays shown, there is plenty of controversy as to whether the ball bounced off the ground or Edwards' hand. Thus, the TD should have been upheld.
@Necrobio Mike Pereira, a trained referee, said he would have overturned it prior to it being overturned.  Do you have professional referee training? Â
@jb_22  @Lucas Cole When the announcers on Fox themselves are saying that there wasn't enough to overturn the ruling on the field, that should tell you something. I am sure they're not Seahawks homers.
@Lucas Cole  @jb_22   My team is the Hawks.  I'm just not a subjective homer like yourself.  Pretty cool you have a hi def 60" LED though.  Please tell me more about the consumer products you own.
A win is a win and I'll take it.
"Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice, left, celebrates after his touchdown reception with Chicago Bears safety Major Wright covering in overtime to give the Seahawks a 23-17 win over the Bears in an NFL football game in Chicago, Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012. " Â Uh, really? That picture shows Rice after getting hit in the head, I don't think he's celebrating there.Â
@pinkyjones good catch....no, he certainly wasn't celebrating...at that particular moment I don't think he even knew where he was!
@runtwentysix  @pinkyjones Way to take one for the team Sidney Rice!
Seattle rarely wins when facing that referee. Plus on the road at 10:00 AM?!!
Â
That game was a roller coaster ride, but Russel Wilson was too hard to stop in the end.
Windowseat.....I smell a troll!
Wolfen..........Take it to the house man.You are right on the money!
Great win even if I was sittin on my hands at the end of the game.Savor the moment and the moments yet to come!
Playing good football which is always nice compared to what northwest sports fan is used too..
Solid win on the road against a very good team. I don't get all the whining about the ref's though? What calls did I miss that were so terrible?
@Pwrstrokin Did you watch the game? They took a touchdown AWAY from us, GAVE one to Chicago, and Lynch's fumble was questionable, but a real hard call. Officiating was iffy at best. II thought they were subs...
Â
@Wolfen Yep watched it on a crystal clear 60" HD.....with a DVR. They didn't "take away" a TD from us. The nose of the ball hit the ground. And they didn't "give" a TD to the Bears. He was in. Just because you don't like the call doesn't make it a bad one.
@Pwrstrokin no such thing as crystal clear... the game was on Fox.
@Rockberry  @StringerJoe  @Pwrstrokin How much do THOSE tickets cost??? :)
Â
@StringerJoe  @Wolfen  @Pwrstrokin I was chillin on the hubble and I was watching it through the lens, yo!
@Wolfen  @Pwrstrokin I was surrounded by 18 4K HD screens hanging wit' my homeboyz at the NORAD control room. There was a fumble by Chicago on a punt return that Seattle recovered. The TV announcers saw it. I saw it. My crew saw it.
Â
The refs didn't see it.
@Pwrstrokin Weird....I was surrounded by three HD t.v.'s, one MUCH larger than 60", AND about 150 people who were ALL going......"wha??" Of course, WE were all hanging together in the moment, enjoying the game and good company....not DVR'inn it for our own instant replay. You could very well be right. No matter......we WON! GO HAWKS!
Â
 @Wolfen  @PwrstrokinÂ
That 3rd quarter TD drive by Chicago was yellow flag charity.
@Pwrstrokin  @brewzbrothers  @Wolfen how about the no call holding penalty in the endzone when they pulled Clemons to the ground in the endzone, safety baby!
@brewzbrothers  @Wolfen  Just watched the 3rd Qtr TD drive by the Bears and there were 2 flags against the Hawks. Hands to the face by Bruce Irvin and blow to the head of Cutler after sliding. Are you saying these fouls didn't occur? Or the ref's should have just ignored them?
GREAT WIN boys!
Â
And I want to extend a personal thanks to the St. Louis Rams for being the 49er's kryptonite this year!
mstipton...you are officially added to the "bite me" list.Wilson only gets better every game. The best is yet to come!
That was a fun game to watch ........... they beat Chicago and the guys in the stripe shirts. These guys just don't give up. What a team effort .
Well, considering the refs calls favorable to the Bears most of the time, including calling back one of the Seahwk touchdowns, it was a surprising win. I really like this new QB Wilson
Very happy to see the Seahawks pull off a good solid win on the road.
My only complaint is that I see a lot of missed penalties, and just plain bad calls throughout the NFL.
I would love to see refs that were not owned by the NFL, but instead contracted by the NLF (or whatever league) and paid based on their accuracy and completeness of calls during games.
Thanks for the win. You got lucky again.
Â
Â
Taking apart the Bears' defense for 177 yards on the final two drives was not "luck."
@StringerJoe If you look at the stats such as running yards, passing yards, total yards, and time of possession we won all of those categories. We deserved to win this game, despite the odds that were against us.
@bobalouie Lucky? Come ON man......we were playing the refs too. Sidney got his bell rung, but held on. Give our boys some solid KUDOS! GO HAWKS!
