Seattle will have team in new women's pro soccer league
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The U.S. Soccer Federation announced it will start a new women's professional league in 2013, and that Portland and Seattle will be two of the eight clubs.
The other teams are based in Boston, Chicago, western New York, New Jersey, Kansas City and Washington, D.C.
The season is expected to start in March or April and conclude in September or October.
Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson will also invest in the women's league. He said Wednesday that the Timbers are pleased to do their part to help establish a top-flight women's league in the United States.
Paulson says the new team's name and logo will be released in the coming weeks.

Awesome to Seattle be put into that small list of cities that get a team, but I am surprised to see Cali or Texas didnt get one as well..
I love football and I love Seattle, so I'm going to cheer for you Ladies!! Can't wait to see them play!!
I wish them luck but I don't see how anyone could care about women's soccer in this country. Â Prediction: Â It will fail and very few women will support the sport. Â And there won't be enough men spectators to carry it. Â
@lakeview Possibly, but there are LOTS of girls' soccer teams, recreation, select, premiere, crossfire, indoor etc.in the area. Newport HS has 3 full teams, as do a number of other area High Schools. I would guess that it is the biggest sport for girls in the area by number of participants (boys spread out over soccer, football, baseball, etc.). Plus the Storm and the Lady Dawgs have shown that Seattle has more interest in women's sports than a lot of cities. Will be interesting to see.Â
Why isn't the Port of Seattle up in arms about this. Don't they know it will cause traffic and cost them thousands of jobs?
 @Hachee_Bungwhy Love the sarcasm....  :-)
It wont last... I give it three seasons before it folds.Â
@PackersCougsBravesSounders I think you're thinking of the XFL
 @PackersCougsBravesSounders That's what they said about the WNBA.
 @donner  @PackersCougsBravesSounders Most of the WNBA teams lose money and those losses are subsidized by the NBA, which itself is on bad financial footing. The WNBA's overall attendance figures are decreasing year by year.
Â
Who is going to absorb the financial losses of a women's soccer league? I think Packs' prediction of three seasons is just about right.
 @donner  @PackersCougsBravesSounders WNBA should fold also. Wouldn't exist without Seattle or NBA subsidies
 @PackersCougsBravesSounders Wow, your pretty generous.
