SEATTLE -- If you're a Seahawks fan, there's a good chance you've heard the name Byron Maxwell a lot lately.

That's because the Seahawks cornerback has stepped up in a big way since Seattle lost Brandon Browner to injury (and then suspension) and Walter Thurmond to a four-game ban.

Maxwell seemingly came out of nowhere to help the Seahawks down the stretch run, but his teammates would be the first to tell you they're not surprised by his stellar play.

They obviously know him better than we do, so who in the world is Byron Maxwell? Here's some information that will help you get to know the Seahawks fill-in extraordinaire:

PERSONAL

Name / Number: Byron Maxwell / #41
Born: February 23, 1988 in North Charleston, South Carolina
College: Clemson
Drafted: 6th round, 173rd overall in 2011

STATS

Tackles: 25 combined, 21 solo
Interceptions: 3 -- all have happened in last two games
Passes Defended: 11 -- 6 in last two games

WHAT TEAMMATES ARE SAYING

Earl Thomas: "He's very humble. He wants it. He gets it. He's very familiar with the system. He's a 'want to' guy. When you have guys that show great effort like he and Jeremy Lane, you're going to have a lot of success.

"One thing I need to say about him: he needs to cut his hair. He's getting like a cave man out there."

EXPECTATIONS

Byron Maxwell is the starter moving forward, but he'll likely lose that role when Walter Thurmond returns from his four-game suspension next week. Even though he won't be a starter, Maxwell will still see the field. This isn't the first time he's stepped up like this. Maxwell did the same thing last year after Brandon Browner was suspended and Walter Thurmond was injured. That means Maxwell is a nice insurance policy moving forward (just in case anything else adverse happens).
