As far as Nigel Williams-Goss is concerned, there's no stage too big. That's why the freshman guard is fired up for the Huskies first road games of the season.
This isn't a typical road trip. Washington is heading to New York City for this week's 2K Sports Classic. The Huskies face Indiana on Thursday, and either No. 18 Connecticut or Boston College on Friday. All games are played at Madison Square Garden.
"Basketball is basketball," Williams-Goss said. "The venue is obviously different, playing at such a historic venue like Madison Square Garden. We just have to stay focused just like it's any other game."
Big stages are nothing new to Williams-Goss. He's only 19-years-old, but he's already played internationally for Team USA, and competed against the top recruits in the country at the McDonald's All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic (which was played in Brooklyn) last year.
"I love New York," Williams-Goss said. "I love to play at the highest level possible and on the biggest stages. That's something I've always lived for. This is just another one of those big stages and I'm really looking forward to it."
Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar has known Williams-Goss since he was in seventh grade. Romar said he's always watched his young star shine against older competition. He doesn't expect it to be any different this week.
"You never hear him talk about his age," said Romar. "He's disappointed if he's not one of the better guys out there. That's just kind of how he's wired."
Williams-Goss hasn't struggled often in his first three games with the Huskies. He's averaging 13.7 points, 5.3 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game. He scored a career-high 22 points in last Sunday's 92-80 win against Eastern Washington.
"This is what we all dream of growing up, playing against prestigious schools like Indiana" said Williams-Goss. "I'm definitely really excited."
The Huskies and Hoosiers tip-off at 6:30pm on Thursday. It's only the fourth meeting between the two schools all-time, and it's the first showdown since 1979.
