Wilson leads Seahawks to 44-14 win over Chiefs
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Russell Wilson made the most of his first chance to start for Seattle.
The rookie quarterback threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns in a just under three quarters of work Friday night, leading the Seahawks to a 44-14 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The third-round draft pick has been competing for the No. 1 job with Matt Flynn, the former Green Bay backup who signed in the offseason. Wilson had impressed in the second half of preseason wins over Tennessee and Denver, but was downright dazzling in his first NFL start.
When he wasn't hooking up with one of his wide receivers or handing off to Robert Turbin, who started in place of injured Marshawn Lynch, the savvy Wilson was gouging the Chiefs for big gains on the ground. He scrambled twice for 58 yards, both times helping to set up scores.
Things didn't go nearly as well for the Chiefs, who were coming off a dud in St. Louis.
New offensive coordinator Brian Daboll's attack fizzled from the start, managing just three yards in the first quarter and going three-and-out on three of its first four chances.
Matt Cassel was 19 of 34 for 168 yards and a touchdown, and was intercepted by Seattle safety Earl Thomas, who returned it 75 yards for a third-quarter touchdown.
Even the special teams were a disaster for Kansas City, which watched Golden Tate zigzag 95 yards on a punt return with 2:12 left in the third quarter. The touchdown gave Seattle a 44-7 lead and sent the sparse crowd at Arrowhead Stadium streaming for the exits.
The Seahawks (No. 22 in the AP Pro 32) are unbeaten in the preseason, and looked downright unbeatable against a Chiefs defense that was among the best in the NFL at the end of last year.
Of course, the Chiefs were playing without starting safety Kendrick Lewis, who is out with a shoulder injury, and cornerback Brandon Flowers, who has missed several weeks with a heel injury.
Still, the Seahawks managed to slash through the defensive line for huge gains on the ground, and that helped give Wilson plenty of time to sit in the pocket and pick apart the secondary.
He led the Seahawks to field goals on their first three possessions before finding tight end Kellen Winslow alone for a 21-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter.
The Chiefs (No. 18, AP Pro 32) answered with their best drive of the night, going 80 yards and scoring on a short TD pass from Cassel to Dexter McCluster. Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, who signed his franchise tender just a week ago, caught his only pass on the drive.

Looks like the 'always compete" mantra is working....
I'd be cautious. This is only the Chiefs and during pre-season. While Wilson looks to be a rising star, he has yet to be challenged and that is where experience will come into play. Flynn may still be the better pick in the regular season. Tavaris has already proved that he is not adequate, either in the pre-season or regular season. It's time to cut him.

Russell Wilson was awesome.........whether he or Matt Flynn starts at QB this year, I am very excited for the season to start! And I hope Tavaris finally gets cut Monday!!
Go Hawks! I have been amazed this preseason and hoping it carries over to the regular season. Dare we hope for a spot in the playoffs and maybe just maybe the Super Bowl. What a dream come true.Â

GREAT WIN! Really!
Wilson showed a lot of poise, confidence and professionalism. He had a couple of great runs, including getting out of bounds before taking any nasty hits. He threw to a gamut of receivers, so that discussion is still ongoing. All in all, he made a serious case for himself.
But the question remains: Do we pay Flynn $26 million to be a backup? I don't think so.
Gonna be some ugly decisions for cuts are announced on Monday, that's for sure.
Forgot to say yes, great win! And Wilson showed a lot of poise and leadership. He's obviously earned the respect of the team and coaching staff.Â
 @svensson Are you saying you think they might actually cut Flynn? Obviously a huge step in several ways if so, but If they sincerely think Wilson is the man for the present and future it would be far smarter than starting Flynn anyway just because of (the guaranteed portion of) his price tag.
Heck, let Portis and Jackson compete for backup; Jackson is a lot better and tougher than many give him credit for. I can't even imagine trying to lob a football downfield a few dozen times with a torn pectoral muscle, much less doing so after some of the brutal hits the guy took.Â
@MargeGunderson Oh, no. I wasn't implying that we cut Flynn, rather that we start him and let Wilson be the #2. While Wilson did a helluva a job yesterday [and I honestly can't see how he could have done a better one], it was only against the Chiefs, who have major issues and are not expected to win more than 5 games this season. And after all, we did just pay Flynn the aforementioned $26 million. There is no way that we're sitting him, no matter how 'unconventional' Carroll likes to portray himself.
I'd pick Jackson as the third man, if only for his experience and toughness. Absolute full credit for playing over half the season last year with a torn pectoral!
